Initial Avengers: Age of Ultron thoughts

Probably a 3/5. Parts of it 5/5, parts of it 1/5. Really liked the Hawkeye, Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch and (spoiler) parts of the film. Not too fussed about the rest of it. James Spader was even more wonderful than usual though.

Yes, James Spader did a great job - I am normally extremely bored by AIs in superhero stories but basing bits of him on Tony and having Ultron both embrace and hate that worked really well.

I think they did a really amazing job of making Ultron sound like Tony, both speech patterns and sound-wise. To the point where I'm wondering if they did any post-production to loop RDJ doing some of the lines.

I think it's also that Spader had to do most of the heavy lifting with just his voice, because, unlike a lot of the mo-cap character, Ultron has to move like a robot so he can't use body language in quite the same way.

Agree on all you say, not sure I disliked the rest as much as you did.

James Spader got added to my list of "would literally listen to him read the phone book" voices due to this.

Looking back on it, and writing up my full thoughts, I may have been being a bit mean. But I really didn't like the Bruce/Natasha bits :)

Those could've been worse. Also better, but definitely worse. Also is (spoiler) Vision or Pietro? Slightly confused. Or Wanda? heh.

Spoiler is Vision, because the Twinses were in the Cap 2 end bit. And the poor unfortunate friend I watched Cap 2 may have complained about how loudly I squeed about them, even before we got any characterisation.

Ah! I am liking Vision but I was already a Paul Bettany fan too. I'm glad they were able to be brought in, even with What Happened. I also kind of wonder given that if the X-Men people and the Avengers people did a split down the middle, so to speak, wrt who each franchise got to use. Then again, I don't know if What Happened would necessarily be permanent either.

In immediate recall, the X-Men films can't mention the Twinses code names or "real" names, hence Peter Maximoff, while the Avengers can't mention who 'I hate my mutant Dad' is, hence them being enhanced humans in Avengers.

To a certain extent, I'm quite happy that different companies got X-Men and Avengers because it means they all get separate films, rather than the otherwise inevitable Avengers vs X-Men film that the X-men would lose the fight in (despite the fact that they would so totally win).

Well, technically speaking Peter could be Anglicising, I think? But that makes sense. I really want X-Men Peter to be Magneto's son (I've got an irrational hate for someone who said it was possible he wasn't in the face of the extremely obvious hints that my friend Margret who isn't fannish picked up on immediately). But yes. I get it.

I think it works better for movie only audiences, too, it helps keep the characters straight. Also why I'm glad we won't get too confused by Peter being Quicksilver in X-Men (I'm sure there are plenty of speed puns that could be used, though a mischievous part of me wants him to be codenamed Mercury because it would be funny and also work).
