Because they brought the worst out in each other.

Not that it was either of their faults.

Because Buffy is obviously not quite right after being brought back from heaven and needed someone where it doesn't matter if she damages them and Spike has the impulse control you would expect from a demon inhabiting someone who stopped growing up in his early twenties. And because of his personality, Spike is incapable of doing things by half and it turns them both into mildly unpleasant people when they're with each other.*

They're so much better in season 7 once they've both realised that they are terrible for each other. Or Buffy has at least. And Spike actually kind of grows up because of the relationship, because I don't think he would have been capable of the "No you don't. But thanks for saying it." bit beforehand.

This doesn't prevent it from being the most unfeasibly uncomfortable 'ship on the show, and I'm including that horrible period where Willow and Xander cheated on Oz and Cordelia because let he who has not done stupid things as a teenager cast the first stone.

* In re: the thing that Spike nearly does. He's a soulless vampire, exactly how well do you expect him to behave?

Spike/Buffy was one of the few ships that I strongly disliked and yet could see why the characters got together. I guess I prefer that to random heterosexual smushing...

The peculiar pairings at the end of Voyager remain the worst examples I've ever seen of that.
