And to the end of Alan Hansen's spell on Match of the Day. Apparently he's been on it for 22 years and he's becoming too expensive to keep on.
I can, to a certain extent, understand the argument that he's been out of football for too long and the game has changed so much that it's time for fresher, younger blood, but he'll be difficult to replace.
There's something pleasingly dour about Hansen. It's his unwillingness to be impressed by attacking flash and a preference for pointing out the defensive flaws that lead to goals.
That's what I'll miss most.
He was always wonderfully sussinct, even when he was wrong. He'll always be remembers for that line of "you can't win anything with kids."
The thing is, he's not wrong. Those kids were surrounded by some wiser old heads, and these older hands were responsible for a lot of the success that year.
So, to Alan Hansen, a man who spoke a lot of sense.
