Politics and Art - There's an interesting post about the Orson Scott Card/Ender's Game boycott hooha here - http://nihilistic-kid.livejournal.com/1843125.html

I have to admit I'm one of the people who is made uncomfortable by the boycotting of people's works because of their political views. It's all a bit too much "he is not a member of the party so his book will not be published" for my tastes. I mean I'm cool with "this guy is a douche for the following reasons, and I won't be paying for the film," because I am all about individual choice and informing people of stuff, but organised art boycotting, count me out.

I'm definitely uncomfortable with boycotting works because of the author's political views (whether in or out of their works), but I'm completely comfortable with boycotting an artist's work when they use their money and influence to publish (in a non-fiction work) their opinion that ideally, lesbians should be sent to rape camps to learn to be proper women. That's not a legitimate political view, that's a vicious attack, and I feel absolutely no compunction in participating in an organised boycott of anything that will bring fame or money to such a person.

Ah, I thought he'd just been running his mouth. I think that definitely crosses the "Polanski" line. (I admit my line in the sand is criminal conduct of the non-been arrested at a protest kind)

No, he publishes his own newspaper of such opinions including inciting violence against GLBT people. If he was just a garden variety homophobe i probably wouldn't read his books but I wouldn't particularly discourage other people either. But Card is way over that line for me.
