redfiona99Which is the second in the Newbury and Hobbes series (I reviewed the first "The Affinity Bridge" here - http://redfiona99.livejournal.com/814635.html). This was the book whose cover drew me in, because I am an absolute sucker for Egyptology and a gilded death mask (even if it is King Tut's) is always a sure way to my heart and wallet.
After my somewhat mixed feelings about the first book, I am pleased to say this is much better. Mann's writing of character and dialogue have improved immeasurably and the worst of the anachronisms have gone. Once again there are suitably sinister goings-on (although oddly enough chapter one is again the best chapter of the book) and some nice touches. There is a plot hole but it's a forgivable one. My favourite thing (my Egyptology kink notwithstanding) is how it builds on the setting and circumstances of the first book in a believable and interesting way. The situation of the characters at the end makes me want the next book in the series and I plan on buying it as soon as I am able.
