Now this was one mind-bending film. I will give it top marks for going further than I expected it to. One happening in particular was most annoying, unexpected and upsetting. Really.
I never knew someone quite as well, macho, as Peter Stormare could do camp quite that well. I thought it was Geoffrey Rush at first, but that might have been to do with the hair dye :) . The man is slowly becoming the actor responsible for doing the really shocking things in films that are already quite outrageous. See also Fargo.
Really, do go see it.
Lots of bits in 8MM made me think of other films. The bit in the car with the camera reminded me of a little indie flick called 'The Living End' which I heartily recommend, even if it is a little warped.
The music sounded like someone ripping off Danny Elfman, but badly. This will of course be when it turns out to actually have been him. (note - looked it up and it wasn't)
And of course the bad guys listen to Danzig and Aphex Twin. Bah, I listen to the Aphex Twin and have yet to go nutso.
It had a very similar feel to Marilyn Manson's autobiography. Good book, but take the Parental Advisory sticker seriously. And you will feel dirty after reading it.
Information I already knew but was reinforced-
1) Nicolas Cage is one of those people who can do an effortlessly cool walk.
2) Joaquin Phoenix belongs in the category 'ridiculously beautiful', which is somewhat complicated by having only four members. (For the record, Cate Blanchett, Ralph Finnes, Daniel Craig, Joaquin Phoenix)
3) Do not watch films like this late at night, you will get nightmares.
I think they're trying to build this up into the Sunday Night Extreme Cinema Season, like they used to have on Film Four (The greatest film channel in the world). Which means there should be some seriously good films coming on soon. And Mark Kermode. I hope. Sorry, he's one of the few people to do with film who I think give a damn. He likes films, not because x,y or z has a good reputation, but because they're actually good.
Meanwhile, next week is supposed to be 'A Clockwork Orange' so I'll be up till after midnight then as well.
