Two Yearly Memes
Jan. 11th, 2012 05:50 pmOnly 11 days late, which counts as good for me ;)
1) Was 2011 a good year for you?
Yes, I officially got my PhD, had my first paper published and got my first 'real' job. I can't complain.
2) What was your favorite moment of the year?
Desmond Tutu at my graduation. Sod my getting a silly hat, he really is amazing.
Or Ernst and Wuthrich at EuroMar.
3) What was your least favorite moment of the year?
Drunken stupidity struck again a few times.
4) Where were you when 2011 began?
Coventry
5) Who were you with?
Tig, Dan, Pagey and Jayson.
6) Where will you be when 2011 ends? / Where were you when 2011 ended?
Home with Nan and Mum.
7) Who will you be with when 2011 ends? / Who were you with when 2011 ended?
Nan and Mum.
8) Did you keep your new years resolution of 2011?
Yes, I think. And it seems to have improved everything for everyone. I got compliaments on the thoroughness of my lab book even.
9) Do you have a new years resolution for 2011?
Better organisation, do more reading (work-related), go to the gym more often and generally get fitter. Oh and do the damn housework and tidy up.
10) Did you fall in love in 2011?
No. Thank goodness.
11) If yes, with who?
12) If yes, do they know?
13) Do you regret it?
14) Did you breakup with anyone in 2011?
No.
15) Did you make any new friends in 2011?
Lots of really lovely work colleagues.
16) Who are your favorite new friends?
Work peeps.
17) What was your favorite month of 2011?
From the middle of July to the end of August was pretty awesome.
18) Did you travel outside of theUS UK in 2011?
Yes. To Belgium, Germany and Austria. The last was via Switzerland, but other than breaking Swiss air transport, I don't think that actually counts as visiting Switzerland.
19) How many different states counties did you travel to in 2011?
I've travelled remarkably little within the UK, mostly sticking to the Midlands with the exception of home and the jaunt to Scarborough.
20) Did you lose anybody close to you in 2011?
Not to me, no, but one of my grandmother's friend's died which was sad because I knew him, and the continued survival of another of my Nan's friends (who I know better) is more down to human stubborness than anything else.
21) Did you miss anybody in the past year?
The fencers and the other Leicester peeps more than they could possibly know, and more than I ever imagined. It's not that I didn't miss people before, but there was normally someone new and interesting to know while (not that my work colleagues aren't lovely and interesting) that's not happened this year.
22) What was your favorite movie that you saw in 2011?
Thor. Yes, I know, but even thinking about it makes me go 'bweeh!', and all glee!flail!
23) What was your favorite song from 2011?
Hmm, it's difficult. There's stuff that I accept and agree will still be held up as a classic in 20 years time (Adele's Someone Like You, particularly the live version from the Brits - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZkOvkhdGkF8), but in terms of stuff I've loved, it's all been dance (ish), pop hop, dub-stepy.
My absolute favourite is probably My Heart Skips A Beat by Olly Murs and Rizzle Kicks - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j5dFe-WKuPs&ob=av2e
Other options include:
Unorthadox - Wretch 32 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LysZJBo2HI4
Blind Faith - Chase And Status - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B5hhy9OAmlE&feature=related Not the official video because it has a long plot intro and stops and is generally too clever for it's own good.
Me And You - Nero - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bE47er6qnqg
Louder - DJ Fresh - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eE-dwpWpscU
Down With The Trumpets - Rizzle Kicks - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ip8OsExLJs
Earthquake - Labrinth (spelling his) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u0fk6syQ7iY&ob=av2e
24) What was your favorite record from 2011?
I failed utterly at LPs in 2011. I blame business and a lack of money.
25) How many concerts did you see in 2011?
None, see previous statement.
26) Did you have a favorite concert in 2011?
Sadly n/a.
27) Did you drink a lot of alcohol in 2011?
Not really. Not deliberately either, just that I didn't.
28) Did you do a lot of drugs in 2011?
No.
29) How many people did you sleep with in 2011?
0
30) Did you do anything you are ashamed of this year? Nothing out of the ordinary, just a few incidences of drunken stupidity.
31) What was the worst lie someone told you in 2011?
Depending on how it all washes out, my boy cousin telling me he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder stands a good chance of winning this. He still is yet to beat last year when he had an alleged brain tumour (he didn't tell me about that, my Mum did).
32) Did you treat somebody badly in 2011?
Not really, I've tried to be good this year.
33) Did somebody treat you badly in 2011?
No, or not that I noticed.
34) How much money did you spend in 2011?
Not that much, given that I've moved into a flat on my own and rents in Birmingham are ridiculous.
Actually this year, more than ever, I've noticed inflation. I'm lucky, I have a job that pays well, but I can quite easily imagine the difficults you'd have if you didn't and you had children to feed as well as yourself.
35) What was your proudest moment of 2011?
I believe the words, [real name redacted] PhD do spring remarkably easily to mind.
36) If you could go back in time to any moment of 2011 and change something, what would it be?
A few things, nothing major.
37) What are your plans for 2012?
Get to grips with NMR and Varian spectrometers. Publish some papers. My Mum would like me to add buy a house to that list, but I don't know how I feel about that. Or rather I do, but I have no idea how I feel underneath all the terror.

13 or 14 big fics, depending on how you classify 'The Race', which is a reasonable amount, especially given that two of them are long (for fics I have written).
My favourite story this year: You can't make me choose between Holmes At Christmas and The Time Between. I think what I like about them is that, in both, I've managed to tell the story I wanted to tell about the characters and included a plot, which is something I have been working on, even if a couple of people have spotted that The Time Between really is a few character pieces joined together with plot.
My best story this year: Going off the feedback, The Time Between. It started with a brilliant prompt from
lilacsigil which was detailed enough for me to get the kernel of the story and open enough that I could do things with it. It really was a case of the moment I got the prompt I knew what I wanted to write. I also had enormous help from
renata_kedavra who did a wonderful beta job and caught a lot of stuff I wouldn't have done, and really knocked the story into shape, particularly the timeline, and the characterisation/motivations of the Brotherhood.
Story most underappreciated by the universe, in my opinion: I am ridiculously happy with the amount of feedback I have gotten in 2011. I get far more than I ought to given that I write gen in shippy fandoms and ship-fic in gen fandoms, and beyond that I write a lot of minor characters.
Most fun story: The Race, because 1) it's a very fun, happy fic and 2) I got to mess around with the 'aliens made them do it' prompt. I delight in being awkward, even more so when people take it in the spirit it's intended. Also, lets be honest here, reboot Kirk does not need aliens to convince him to have sex.
Most sexy story: From my own personal view, 'You Should See Them In Practise' but I am biased.
Story with single sexiest moment: Regal leaning on Jericho's door in 'A Bad Night'. It's all raffish and rumpled, and the promise of sex.
Hardest story to write: Dirty Little Secret, it terms of time taken and stops and starts. Everyone mentioned in the fic was employed by the WWE when I started writing it, for those people who want to know how long.
"Holy crap, that's *wrong*, even for you" story: Dirty Little Secret. As I said while writing it, 'Randy is scummy' doesn't even begin to cover it.
Story that shifted my own perceptions of the characters: None of them really, every fandom I've written in has been a fandom where I already had quite a fixed idea about the characters.
Biggest disappointment: Bang, Bang On The Door. I can't write Punk, I can't catch the intrinsically C.M.Punky-essence of him. I still think that's what's missing in this.
Biggest surprise: How much people liked An Honest Answer. I think it's Mark Sheppard's performance as Canton Delaware (III).
Most unintentionally telling story: One Thousand and Ninety Six Days In The Making of a Man is very much accidentally about my time in halls. I needed a few background details for McCoy's time at Starfleet Academy, and stole most of them, more or less wholesale, from my own time in halls. Anything that doesn't involve nephrology or space is quite close to something that happened to either me or someone I knew.
Next Time Without The Head Injury comes by a few of the settings and background events the same way. The appearance of Jenny, the girlfriend, while not mentioned, it based on a member of the women's football team I meet at a sports awards and both the location of the night before and Mica's chosen sport (which was one of a couple of serendipitous while writing things that happened to me this year, given that I needed something else for her to feel bad about and the prompt had Ianto as a rugby player so football fitted well as Mica's sport) are for her. The location of the brunch and park that the football practise takes place on are pinched from locations in Leicester (and the name from somewhere in St. Helens).
