Has hosted AD and R, who are on a flying visit to the UK on their way to Canada. Yet more of my friends where I occasionally have to go 'which continent are they on today?' They liked the flat, I even managed to get the damn place clean for them, and the spiders mostly behaved themselves. I found a new takeaway place that's really nice (and I'd been so good too, only my second takeaway since April). Birmingham Museum is pretty nice, lots of pre-Raphaelite stuff, and the Staffordshire Hoard (http://www.staffordshirehoard.org.uk/) and I really must go again to see the other things I missed. They're having a laugh though, charging £6 for the special exhibition on metal. I can remember when those kind of things were £2.

Day 8 - Most overrated book

Tempted to say anything by Charles Dickens but I know that it's not that he's a bad writer, per se, it's just that I bounce off his work.

Add to that that I have a deep seated distrust of 'popular'/'proper' books unless they're recommended by a friend, it makes questions like this hard to answer. So, as it's a book I have read, and I am aware of it's importance in SF/Fantasy circles, I hereby humbly suggest 'The Handmaid's Tale' by Margaret Atwood.

It's not that it's a bad book, I think the world building is excellent, it's just the protagonist doesn't entirely convince me, and I don't like how any woman who isn't the narrator is treated by the narrative. I know that it's supposed to convey the mind-set of the era and how the regime has pitted woman against woman, but that doesn't mean I have to like it and it also doesn't ring true.

ROFL. I kinda can't stand Charles Dickens' writing.

As far as The Handmaid's Tale goes, I do love Margaret Atwood but it's not my favourite of hers. I'd recommend her Oryx and Crake, another dystopia, over The Handmaid's Tale any day.
