Just come back from Nottingham Uni. It was kinda blah. But that isn't what really wound me up. Basically, the Halls of Residence all have Common Rooms. Now most of them have a formal dinner about once a week. Which really put me off for 3 reasons.

1) The word formal, it means dressy. It means have to take time and effort to look good. Most days after hard studying, I don't feel like dressy. It also means skirts or dresses. Which is also a no a lot of the time.

2) The big thing about these formal dinners is that instead of going to all that effort of moving your own tray, you get served. What like the little darlings need more pampering. Sorry, have dinning issues and waitressing issues.

3) Apparently before the meal they have to say Grace in Latin. Okay other than obviously trying to do the Oxbridge thing which is soooo passe, do they not think of various people who don't say Grace, like atheists. And I'm presuming that various other religions would have a problem also.

My own personal problems are with it being in Latin. What English isn't good enough now?! Basic background. I'm a Protestant, not spectacularly hardline (I don't think the pretty pictures are breaking any of the Commandments) but a Proddy none the less. And one of the basic tennents of that is that worship is done in a language that you understand. Because saying things without meaning them is pointless. And I don't speak Latin, so I couldn't and wouldn't. I think I'd have problems going there.

But at least Nottingham's not as elitist as Oxbridge... I remember going for an interview at Cambridge and well, argh. When someone (the someone in question being the dean of the college) tells you 'you know it's difficult to get a place here, don't you?' and proceeds to ask you 'you're from Yorkshire, aren't you?', you know you're in trouble. I obviously was, seeing as how I didn't get a place and all. lol.

But my point is, Nottingham's a rather cool place and, well, doesn't it have the largest ratio of pubs/bars to people in the country? You can see where my priorities lie. I know a few people at Nottingham Uni and they all seem to like it. Then again, they don't live in halls, and I can see how the Latin grace thing would be annoying. Hell, if I were a student there, which isn't exactly likely since a) I'm an Egyptology student and nowhere outside of Liverpool/Oxbridge does it... and b) I'm quite happy in Liverpool thank you very much - I'd be put off by the Latin grace, despite the fact that I studied Latin. Agnosticism doesn't exactly lend itself all too well to the recitation of grace in any language, let alone Latin and especially when it's so obviously a pseudo-Oxbridge practice. Meh.

Still, you could always get a flat. Or live in a house. Or in private halls of residence. Don't discount the uni just 'cos its halls seem to have become pretentious beyond belief. It's actually a cool place.

Of course, I'd suggest Liverpool... lol. But I *am* kinda biased ;)

Well very few places are as bad as Oxbridge. Although I must say from friend's experiences Oxford is the worst of the two.

I don't know that many people who went to Nottingham, but yeah, they all seem to have enjoyed it. Plus the sports facilities rock. If I go to Nottigham I'd probably end up going self-catering, although that would probably turn into a disaster.

Well if you do pick strange subjects like Egyptology :) I was evesdropping (naughty me) on this conversation two other people on the Open day were having and the friend of one wanted to do Astronomy and apparently only 2 Unis do courses in it.

The one problem with Liverpool is that it is too close to home. I'd be coming home demanding my washing be done all the time. No I think that going to uni, for me at least will be part learning and part social experiment, can I cope on my own? 'Cause there'll still be a safety net, but I won't be on baby reins :)
