Apologies in advance if the video doesn't work for you because of the BBC's issues with parts non-UK, but the video of Petrov I was planning on posting yesterday.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/motorsport/formula_one/9188356.stm

He is so lovely.

I mean, I can see where the people that say he's not a "good" driver are coming from but you can see how he's improved through the year as he's got used to closed car driving rather than ice rallying which is where his background is from. And yeah, I know, he's only there because he's got Russian oil money behind him, but I refer you to my previous statement on the matter, which is that hey, Nikki Lauda paid for his first seat in F1.

It must be said that I knew he'd probably kept the drive for next year, which still hasn't been confirmed AFAIK, when I heard the reports of Putin being driven around in the two-seater Renault.

While him keeping his drive, probably, makes me happy, I was sad to hear about Nico Hulkenberg losing his seat at Williams. I mean, it makes sense for Williams, because the replacement can drive and he has petrol money behind him, but I feel sorry for Hulkenberg because he seemed to finally be getting the hang of it. Back when this fad for really young drivers started, someone, probably Martin Brundle, for he is more than occasionally wise, said that he was glad he'd driven when he had and not now because back then you had bedding in time whereas now you can have been and gone as an F1 driver by the time you're 25.

BTW, Petrov keeping Alonso behind him was only the second best occurence of this, the best still has to be Jos Verstappen holding Coulthard back at Monaco in an Arrows!!

Secondary BTW, yes, I know I'm a Ferrari fan so I should have been cheering for Alonso but I dislike him, and I'm scared he'll do to Ferrari what he's done to his previous two teams.

TV thoughts

I still haven't seen the new Nikita, and I know I should but I have the fear. Because I loved La Femme Nikita, not just for the cast and the action scenes but for the mileu (spelling so very wrong). I like the sense that the choices are between doing a bad thing or letting a worse thing happen. Certainly, from the trailers (and yes, I know, you shouldn't judge a TV show from the trailers) there's none of that, there's just Nikita doing the right thing.

Also, Birkhoff just looks wrong.

Other than that, if I have a choice of a leading man played by Roy Dupuis or Shane West, I know damn well which one I'm going to choose.

These thoughts were already wandering through my mind but were brought to the forefront today while I was watching 'The Champions' (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Champions) one of those fantastical spy dramas the late 60s seemed to specialise in. The basis for the adventures is that they work for NEMESIS, an international crime fighting force. They are in a plane crash over the Himalayas but are rescued by one of the ancient mystic civilisations that seem to exist there and are given super-powers, or rather, their own abilities are enhanced to maximal. The trio are two men and a woman (and, by the by, she's the scientist, and, in the intro demonstration, she's the one that gets to lift up a car). Now, being the 60s, they avoid there being more than light flirtation by the simple trick of making her a widow (as used to great effect in Randall and Hopkirk and The Avengers). The thing that gets me is that if they redid it now, half the plots would be about the two men bickering over the woman or her having to chose between them and there's none of that in the show. But then again, in the second episode it's made pretty clear (by inference) that if one of them has sex, the other two are likely to be affected. But I doubt a remake would make it quite as clear that there leading three characters are all dating each other. This is the advantage of the late 60s shows, they could have all kinds of fun subtext because they weren't allowed to have any text at all (see also, Randall and Hopkirk, the Avengers et al.)

Film Meme - Day 4 (why, yes, it's late ;) ) - A film cliché that you love

Difficult to answer because there are a lot of cliches I like - say it after me, not all cliches are bad - but my favourite is probably the one where you've got two or more people working together with the smoothness that I tend to call team work telepathy. There are bonus points if swords are involved. There are always bonus points if swords are involved.
