Oh my beautiful wonderful Azzuri

Okay, so normally a team go out unexpectedly, early and whatnot, they blame the conditions, or the ref, or some other mitigating factor. Not them, pretty much everyone senior is pulling a mea culpa.

Lippi saying that if a team as good as Italy go out, it is the manager's fault and he is sorry for not getting the most out of them possible - http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/world_cup_2010/8759777.stm

Also featuring a general sorry from Buffon, ""Everybody had the desire, the dream to get through but we didn't and it's our fault." And people wonder why I love them like burning.

Our dear and beloved Captain also had something interesting to say - http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/world_cup_2010/8762335.stm

Mostly it's that there's not enough Italian youngsters coming through and why is this and "structural review" said in earnest. He makes an interesting comment at the end, "the European Union and Uefa have also got to realize what the problem is, because if we can't develop this sport better, the risks won't affect just one or two federations but all the European teams." May you enjoy your earned money spinner in Dubai, Fabio.

There's a much longer post in the works about how European football is still taking young talent from poorer countries, it's just now into clubs not national teams and certain knock on effects thereof, plus the generational lifecycle of football teams and some interesting numbers, but basically he's right. You can't blame clubs for trying to get as much skill as possible for the least amount of money possible and there are going to be effects from that.

More generally on management, one set of pundits or another were talking about different management styles, vis a vis the great Gareth Southgate quote about Sven, "we were expecting Winston Churchill and instead got Iain Duncan Smith."

The talk was about whether it's better to play for a roarer or a calculator and how, whether having a manager who was such a great player, and a great figure in your country as Maradonna was an advantage or a disadvantage.

Anyway, Alan Shearer came up with this wonderful quote, because he'd been watching the Argentina matches, and not only did Maradonna live every minute of the game with his players, but every time one of them was subbed off, and at the end of every game, he hugged all his players, and Shearer was saying, 'imagine how much that would mean if you're on the Argentine team, because this hero of yours is telling you how well you've done'. And, while it doesn't work for everyone, Fergie, for instance, has a famously distant relationship to his players, and uses his captain as a proxy for this but an awful lot of very good managers are fathers to their men, as it were.

A song by a band you hate

This was a difficult choice because there's an awful lot of bands that I don't like, but these are the only band I can think of that spawned a mini-me that were worse than they were. That being said, I actually prefer Boyzone's version of Words to the BeeGees version - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CaulZq601F0
