A Whole Bunch of Stuff
Jun. 23rd, 2010 11:14 amFirst, an addendum to the post on the Sontaran Experiment. Probably the best thing about it was the documentary afterwards all about the Sontarans and how they came to be written. I liked the detail about the filming, and the writing.
Another very interesting bit (other than S's amusement at my cry of 'Colin Baker used to be young') was how everyone put the blame for the later Sontaran stories firmly at the door of JNT, which struck me as a little, well unfair's probably the wrong word, but unfair given that there was no-one offering a riposte.
I strongly suspect I was the only person scared by this episode. It's the back-lighting and the scary music. I do not cope well with that which I cannot see. If I can see it, I can identify it and I can deal with it.
Other than that, this was the fun whee!
While I'm not the greatest fan of James Corden, I thought he was perfectly cast as Craig. (Although OMG, he's cast as Planchet in one of the upcoming Musketeer movies) I loved the Doctor accidentally driving him spare.
11 just doesn't do human very well at all, does he? There was much laughter at the "sonic" toothbrush, and the 'how do I switch it on?' at the regular screwdriver.
While 'love conquers all' might be trite, I like it. Particularly when I've been wanting to knock Craig and Sophie's heads together since their first scene.
I also really loved the end scene where Craig, despite knowing first hand through mind-meld (and lots of giggling there too, you really need to find a different way of doing that, Doc) that the Doctor wouldn't come back, still gave him a key because he knew what it would mean. And aww! 11 was so touched, and I wanted to hug him.
A very well done bit of fluff, I liked it enormously.
That was not the episode I was expecting.
It was awesome, don't get me wrong, but unexpected, which I think made it better.
It says something about how well done the Van Gogh episode was that the moment I heard him screaming, my first thought was 'no, not Vincent'. Nothing about the Doctor, or time or anything, just that I didn't want to see him hurt.
Combining what Richard Curtis said in the Confidential for it, that he'd approached Stephen Moffat with the idea for the van Gogh episode, not the other way round and what happened later, I'm assuming that he always had a historical with a creative type penciled in for there and that the character would see the destruction of the TARDIS and they'd pass on the message to the Churchill and Bracewell (yay Bracewell). Also, although I have no idea if it was deliberate or not, well done on the Rory the Robot foreshadowing (in terms of him trying to overcome his programming).
And yay River, travelling through time and space to put the pieces together. I love how they linked the bits together. I also liked the random Captain Jack shout-out.
I really like how the writing enabled you to get the plot about three seconds before the characters did. Because, yes, warrior/trickster-characters, they're not too common. Although, I have to admit, when I saw the glowing, I did think 'characters who were last seen enveloped in a glow, and who are that dangerous, nah, he won't have brought him back that quickly.'
My heart broke for Rory the Robot. And for Eleven. Gah, I think it was the wriggling and the screaming.
So how are they going to get out of that?
The way N and I see it, and let me assure you, we put serious brain power into this, the Doctor has the following resources left:
1) possibly half a robot.
The TARDIS is non-operational, River is trapped inside it (we think, she may be able to escape), Amy has been shot and appears to be dead (we don't think she is, but it knocks her out of the equation for a while) and the Doctor is locked in an unbreakable box.
Rory is the last man standing, depending on how well he can fight against the programming.
I swore I saw a shadowy figure behind Amy with a billowing cloak. However, given that we watched this after 'The Lodger' and I was made jumpy by it, I could have been seeing things.
N, meanwhile, was wondering if River still had the time-travel bracelet, and therefore could maybe escape that way. Even if she couldn't do anything immediately, it might grant another way out.
It's either that, or they're going to have to wait for the Alliance to fall to pieces, which probably won't take long ;)
It was also pointed out, possibly by S, that we haven't had the Doctor-lite episode yet. Having your finale barely feature your main character would be an interesting way to go about it, and part of me hopes that is what they're up to.
Other options that have been discussed include the Doctor (future regeneration) saving himself, the Doctor (past regeneration) saving himself, the Doctor (present regeneration) from the future saving himself (with much reference to angels and coats).
Then there's the fact that River was already in prison, which suggests that she'd already done something, but she seems chirpier, so maybe her "killing" the presumed Doctor is still in her future (not sure how that'd work though). And either way, it lead to me pointing out that time travel plots hurt my brain.
Also, would a time travelling rescue be a bit of a cop-out? I'm going with yes, maybe, it depends how it's done.
So very looking forward to Saturday.
