I think it might well have been something to do with the fallout from Chernobyl, definitely not the incident itself. I don't remember much about it, but it left me with a lifelong fear of radioactivity. It gives me the heebie-jeebies.
It's like nuclear power, for instance, I logically understand that it's cleaner than fossil fuels, and yet, it takes just one tiny thing in a plant to go wrong and it will cause a lot of damage.
