redfiona99: (being human)

I've previously mentioned I don't pick up well on subtext, so this must be screamingly near text. In Vampire Diaries (in the first two episodes at least, I'm hopefully seeing the 3rd one tonight), if you like sex you are a bad person in some way. Of the human characters, the ones that have expressed any interest in sex are the junkie younger brother, the shallow attention seeking girl, the local bike, Vicki (if you pardon the phrase, and at least the show looks like it's actually going beyond that stereotype) and her loser, douchebag boyfriend.

Meanwhile, the good lead girl and her letter jacket ex (who is the the brother of the above Vicki) and her best friend, the witch - this show is not good with introducing characters so I know what their names are, and with the exception of Elena, Vicki and the vamps, I have no idea what anybody is called - who have none of the downsides of the previously mentioned characters are as pure as driven snow.

On the vamp side, the good guy vamp is interested in long walks and long, meaningful talk, while the bad vampire likes sex, blood and rock and roll.

It's a spectacular dichotomy.

Then again, I disturbed my housemate D by saying I was cheap and easy for Ian Sommerhalder, because apparently I'm a nice girl and we don't say things like that, so they might just be reflecting the bizarre biases of society and at least it's equally opportunistically anti-sex.

Then, contra that, it is Kevin Williamson who's doing the writing and I remember the Times running an article describing Dawson's Creek as being the vanguard of neo-puritanism so yeah.

Dawson's Creek absolutely was that. The "bad girl with a tragic past" was bad and tragic because she had sex and really liked to have sex. Perhaps more appallingly, she wanted to discuss the possibility of having sex with her potential sexual partner! There was a lot of LEARN TO RESPECT YOURSELF/KEEP YOUR KNEES CLOSED kind of rhetoric surrounding it.

I started watching VD (what an unfortunate acronym), but I couldn't get into. But man, vampires used to be all about sex and now thanks to this show and Stephenie Meyer they're all about restraint and purity!

Unfortunate acronym is amusing though :)

I think that I'll probably keep watching it but for all the wrong reasons - mockery and Ian Sommerhalder.

Keep watching. Sex isn't all bad. Unless you're a certain character (not Elena, won't say more than that in case you don't want to be spoiled more). I don't think it hates sex so much as wants the brothers to be different? I could be reaching.

The blonde cheerleader is Caroline and the black witch is Bonnie. I still (reasonably up to date) can't remember Vickie's brother's name.

I, too, am cheap and easy for Ian Somerhalder. Really, who wouldn't be?

Thanks for not spoiling me. I've still not seen the Christmas Dr. Who and it's getting ever more difficult to stop people blurting out things about it at me, so I'm incredibly appreciative of people who don't spoil.

I have been known to let The Wrong Thing slip and try very hard not to any more. It's hard to know what's a spoiler and what isn't for some people (screeching about trailers/casting is annoying to me - because they are not spoilers) but plot spoilers for things that someone hasn't watched? Even I can see the sense in not spoiling those :)

Weirdly I didn't like Ian Somerhalder on Smallville - I now want to find time to rewatch his arc and find out if it was the story or the fandom annoyance (it may have been - he was one of Lana's love interests and I like Lana but when fandom is telling you how horrible something is...) but once I saw him on Lost? I was lost (pun intended, mostly).

Paul Wesley was also in Smallville - as Lex's half-brother.

It's like for Children of Earth, some people were complaining about the pained 'OMG' comments after episode 4 when all they said was 'OMG', and it's like, that's not a spoiler, that's a reaction. If you can tell what the plot did from that, you're clairvoyant.

For me, the Ian Sommerhalder thing started when he was on an episode of CSI:original flavour. I ended up surfing through IMDB to find out who the enormously pretty kid with the stunning eyes was.

>>Paul Wesley was also in Smallville - as Lex's half-brother.<< I take it he too took after his mother.

Yes. Exactly. I could have reacted OMG to almost any Torchwood episode (and haven't yet watched COE though I got the DVD for Christmas). Totally.

Oh I am sure I've got that episode too... I remember thinking he was on the last box set I got - so, too, is Josh Holloway in that season.

He was sort of a bad boy, but not Lionel levels. He only did one episode. I do remember seeing him a couple of years later on Crossing Jordan and thinking how familiar he looked.

Man, that makes me think of Secret Life of an American Teenager.
In which one character says, "My father DIED because I had AWESOME SEX!!"
