Watched this straight after 'Waters of Mars' and it was an awesome pallet-cleanser. I can't remember if it was
nwhyte or Stu who said that Sarah Jane best captured the Old Who spirit, but they were right. It was so nice to have characters who seemed to enjoy the weird.
It really was the sensawunda (thank you
nwhyte for that one) that's missing in the other two shows, and while I don't miss it in Torchwood, I miss it ever so much in Dr. Who.
I adore Clyde. He's so well done, and real and plausible.
For all its anviliciousness, I did like the bit about trying to fit in and doing accidentally horrible things in order to do it, even if there was no way that Luke or Clyde could have known.
I also liked that the lead bad guy wasn't actually all that bad. Doing terrible things, mind you, but not a terrible person. I really like that they gave the alien doubts. I approve of shades of grey.
Of course, the human had no such doubts :) Grantham was such a wonderfully oily creation. BTW, Stu, I recognised him from Waters of Mars, he played Dr. Ital. It's amazing what a change adding bit of weight and growing your hair out makes.
Yes, the setting was childish and silly and I loved it.
I think I enjoyed this more than most people appear to have, but I think that's because it happened to hit a few narrative things I like.
