60s music post part 1
Apr. 15th, 2009 06:31 pmMis-using my time at home to increase the amount of stuff on my MP3 player, so I thought I'd share:
1 - The Animals - House of the Rising Sun - http://www.yousendit.com/download/dVlyRE9sSWhrWTkzZUE9PQ
Video on Youtube - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hg7jzi9JAkw
Normally I'm quite laid-back about cover versions and all versions having something to offer etc. And most versions of House of the Rising Sun do have something to offer. But this is the best one :) It's the Hammond organ break that gets me every time.
2 - Gerry and the Pacemakers - Ferry 'Cross the Mersey - http://www.yousendit.com/download/dVlyRE90WkI5eFYzZUE9PQ
Video on Youtube - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=loyRYFUYg9g
It's actually a nice song, but I love it more because it's something I will always associate with my childhood, because when I was little, a trip to Liverpool was a treat, and if we were lucky we'd get to go to the Albert Dock and go on the titular ferry. And they play this as it's sailing along, it's all sunshine and happy memories to me.
The rest are only videos:
3 - Herman's Hermits - Something Is Happening - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Mj48x6-jZs I live with the knowledge that the song is probably exactly as smutty as I think it is ;)
4 - The Hollies - Look Through Any Window - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0CfH-FAGc88
5 - Paul Jones - High Time - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=06E-Mij_SE0
I know Paul Jones better as an actor, mostly because he was in wonderful ridiculous stuff like Uncle Jack and the Loch Ness Monster (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0202204) when I was little. As a singer I know him better as the singer in Manfred Mann, who will feature in part 2.
6 - Cliff Richard - In The Country - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X7i7ajweZXw
While I have my biases against him, I'll admit this is a wonderful pop song.
7 - The Shadows - F.B.I. - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zt9u5VFDcCs
Better known as Cliff's backing band, but more awesome in their own right.
8 - Freddie and the Dreamers - You Were Made For Me - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=So9gS4LGwF8
They're on Blue Peter. So kiddie nostalgia from before my time, but sweetly adorable nonetheless.
9 - Temperence Seven - Pasedena - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-nhvqhLjzgs
I know this better from the Houghton Weavers doing it as a round live.
