Welcome back my insane little show. My, how you've grown.
Some entirely non-spoilery comments first:
Either they've had a huge increase in budget or they've got better at using what they have because the giant pufferfish was so fantastically well done. See also the fight scene. It pleases me that there is one competant fight director working for the BBC.
It's still the Torchwood we know and mock, but the writing has become crisper and snappier and tighter. It's still got a pacing problem, because there wasn't any great sense of Gwen's peril, but I think they can sort it out.
There wasn't the same sense of gloom, doom and Cardiff, and I think I may actually have missed that, but some of us are excessively fond of grit.
Of course the least (or possibly most, he's interesting anyway) gritty thing about it was John Hart, and I think I'm going to end up having to fight my Mum off for the DVDs. He was so much fun and so utterly messed-up and lost and so totally a less pleasant version of the Jack we first met. (Chances of him knowing something about the missing years - high or very high?)
He may well also be the pyscho ex of legend, not that Ianto isn't threatening to turn into a bunny boiler too. Calm down dear, Jack is ... well he's Jack.
Also, bets on who Gray is? Old flame, old parter, old boss, someone who might know about the missing years? A mix of all the above. I am hooked.
Also, he had a sword. And there was banter and just it's all a bit dolphin noises right now.
