I really did prefer The Lazarus Effect to 42, I have no idea why. Because I normally prefer the non-Earth episodes, but the Lazarus Effect, bad CGI apart, just hung together better for me.
Also probably helping it was that there was a good mix of light and dark in The Lazarus Effect while 42 was just played straight. Death by organ was also a nice touch. I love how nice Martha's brother and sister are while her Mum reminds me horribly of Grandma dearest.
Matters were also helped by Mark Gattiss bringing it like woah! I realise I should have realised that the man could act, but I didn't know he could do it well.
I think part of my problem with 42 was that it was, living sun apart, pretty much generic sci-fi. I wish they'd done more with the living sun idea, but I like how in both of them, the bad guys were human.
42 really wasn't that bad, I particularly liked the two crew members who did survive. What I liked, and also liked about Satan's Pit which we also re-watched, was that these characters seemed to have lives before the action began and weren't just moved in for the story. I like that in my writing. I must say, I did particularly like the one that she ended up in the escape pod with.
My reaction to the extra-long season trailer shown after The Lazarus effect
OMG Captain Jack.
Um really, he takes up most of my attention. Also the bit with John Simm sucking what I suppose is air through a gas mask intrigues and horrifies me, which is always a good combo. Next week's moving scarecrows look absolutely terrifying.
