Day 1 of Summer
Jun. 6th, 2006 06:38 pmOverslept, went to gym, going to do some work now.
I would like to thank the British press for being slightly less ridiculous over Rooney's metatarsal than they were about Beckham's.
And in the first of a continuing series of posts, I shall discuss the groups in the group stage of the World Cup, and who I think will go through.
Which contains Germany, Costa Rica, Ecuador and Poland.
Germany are probably going to be one of the two teams that go through, although if one of the major teams is going to suffer an unexpected exit in the first round, it could be them, because their team is not exactly brilliant. But that's the problem, their team at the last World Cup were also decidedly not brilliant, and they ended up being in the final. So, on the basis that no team that contains Michael Ballack and Jens Lehmann can be all bad, I say they'll go through to the next round. I also would like to put money on Robert Huth being the first person to get a yellow card in the tournament.
Costa Rica are my bet for getting second place ahead of Poland. They play like they're managed by Kevin Keegan, and are the only team I've ever seen give Brazil a run for their money on the whole free flowing, no defence thing. Why do I think they'll get to the second round ahead of Poland - because they score more goals, plain and simple. The one thing that could put a spanner in these works is that they have the big opening match against Germany, and well, I can't really see the Germans losing that and the Germans can, sometimes, score quite a few, which would damage their goal difference, which could lead to the Poles going through, because their defence is pretty good.
Poland - they have a dashed good goalie and a decent defence, they just don't have anything resembling a decent attack. This could cost them, even if they get through.
Ecuador - I know nothing about them. They can't be bad if they got through the South American qualifiers. But given this group, I don't think they'll qualify.
Other than that, I'm not talking or thinking about the cycling any more than the bare minimum because it's bloody depressing, and Jean-Marie LeBlanc is starting to talk about sanctions against the team that were ONCE or Liberty-Seguros-Wurth, but are now Astunas-Wurth. Which would be bad since Vino rides for them, and damn it, he doesn't deserve to be punished just because some of his team mates have been doping. That and Santiago Botero has been caught up in the whole mess, and has semi-volutarily suspended himself, and mostly I think it's all going to end up very messy, like as bad as the Festina affair messy.
Onto more good news, while I was at the gym with American Katie, I saw gym-candy. Pretty gym candy with a face to match the body, he was even that most rare thing, a blond Italian. I also had a decent workout, and feel a lot better for it.
