redfiona99: (Dr Who 10)

Saw it today with Nan, and so hence here is my review

Eric Sykes cameo as the caretaker. Especially funny since I bought Nan his autobiography for Christmas. Seriously, the man is a marvel.

David Tennant as Barty Crouch junior. Just yes. He was all Azkaban unhinged too and bloody scary. Also, with a little less licking, was what he was doing when he was worrying me with his crazy Dr. Who.

Mr. Weasley at the World Cup, charging off into danger and standing up to Crouch snr. I love him. Actually I <3 all the Weasleys. That being said I hearby slap Ron upside the head.

The teenagey-ness of it all - because as I have said, whatever else her qualities are JKR writes teenagers damn well, and this film conveyed it better than the others have.

Krum. And in fact pretty much all the schoolchildren various. But Krum! And whichever Patil twin that said "take my hand, my leg, all of me" during the ball scene.

Moody - even as he was Crouch!Moody he was the scary fun. And the scene with the Unforgivables, did that ever work! All praise to what's his name (I want to say Brendan Gleeson but I think I might be wrong) for carrying that off so well.

The casting directors - I may disagree with your decisions but you gave me Bulgarians playing Bulgarians. I therefore commend you.

The set and SF people - seriously 9/10ths of it worked. I'm wondering how they're going to top Moody's DADA classroom for when Snape takes the job because his was seriously creepy.

Mike Newell - dear Sir, please direct the other films. Thank you. No, I mean this. This was better than POA and unless they can find someone stonking to do the rest (Christopher Nolan and Bryan Singer being the two that spring to mind) they could do worse than to stick with him.

Voldemort also looked quite like how I imagined him.

The incredible, wonderful, adorable Frances De La Tour as Madame Maxime.

Neville. Just yes.

Better music this time.

My favourite thing, and this soooooo is not a spoiler, Ferret! Malfoy. Seriously, it may well have made my week.

Nagani, Wormtail, the head in the fire and the Dark Mark sky thing (cannot spell Mors Modre for the life of me) didn't look how I imagined them. God knows why but Nagani in my imagination is a gigantic hooded cobra and the Dark Mark thing was a whole lot more abstractedly symbolic.

Michael Gambon's Dumbledore - sorry still not buying it.

Karkaroff - say hello to over the top.

Cedric - nothing against the kid playing him since I blame the director and screenwriter, but there were some scene where he was the adorable Cedric we know and love and in others he wasn't. But the bit at the end where he was all 'take my body back to my father' I was in love. As I was during Dumbledore's speech. Actually as an addedeum to the above good list - Dumbledore's speech at the end in the Great Hall, yes, that worked.

Steven Kloves is still the screenwriter and still can't write backstory for the next films. Okay example, how much would it have hurt POA to have had the bit were Diggory wants the Hufflepuff match result scrapped actually in (I think it was mentioned but I don't think that Diggory was the Hufflepuff captain was). It would have meant we knew this guy.

He's already managed to screw up the Snape/Lupin/Black backstory so god knows how he's going to shoehorn it all into OOTP. Because dude, it matters, it at least gives Snape some reason for being a spiteful little brat which explains his Death Eateriness and gives Dumbledore some reason for using him as a spy.

The bit at the end where Hermionie, out of nowhere, goes all 'things will never be the same again', pointless, overly obvious addition given that you know what, the audience already got that.

It must have been quite good at least, the good outweighs the bad by at least half a page. I prefer it to POA anyway.

Some things that amused me and are not spoilers:
The kids really are growing up and it's getting a mite obvious.
The merpeople really aren't that scary. I don't see what the fuss was about. Aragog was way scarier.

And for once,

Which was Diggory's death. I love how if he'd just ported out like Harry said he might have got away but know he has to stay and try to defend Harry.

I <3 Cedric.

I know a couple of people on my f-list gave their views on the film and I would reply except I can't find them. At least I though Stasia and Becky had done. Or am I going mad?
