There are no good ways to find out that your apartment block's fire alarm sounds like a turbo-charged car alarm, but at 4 a.m. the morning before a long day of complicated experiments is definitely not good. It's not the worst either though, so, you know.

Don't worry, it wasn't a fire, just an electrical fault outside one of the flats. It went off again twice, but it hasn't since, so I suspect someone may have taken an axe to it.

Also, according to a drunk on the Metro, I look like an off-duty police officer. I'm not sure how I feel about that ;)
