Aug. 25th, 2005 03:14 pmSaw the Fantastic Four yesterday, spoilers only for things that were shiny not for plot.
My reaction - it was like bland cake. It is cake/an action movie that hits most of the right points so it can not be bad, but it also not as good as it could be.
The good:
Reed Richards - Ioan Gruffud finally learnt to act. Sorry I'm in a small group of 1 who hated him in Hornblower, so I'm pleased he wasn't dreadful as Mr. Fantastic.
Ben Grimm - Not only did they get the CGI for his skin right, but they got his character right. Michael Chiklis knocked it straight out of the park. Although reading up on him a bit, that's not surprising (sends love to fellow comic geek).
Victor Von Doom - Julian McMahon, playing a bad guy, getting to sneer and wear good clothes. What's not to love.
The SFX and the sets - were good.
The stunts, especially the one on the bike.
The soundtrack, especially the way it kicked in whenever Johnny did something stupid.
The bad:
Jonny Storm - that was not my Jonny. Because yes, Jonny is a brash idiot at times but he's not that annoying. The one scene that I did like him in was the one with the nurse that ran from the thermometer to the skiing. 'My future wife' indeed.
Latveria - either go with Latvia, or another established Eastern European state, or go with a Ruritanian made up state, don't go for somewhere between the two.
The ending - talk about an anti-climax spoiler You don't defeat Victor Doom that easily end spoiler

Overall - solid comic book adaptaion, more plot would have been nice. Much love for Ben Grimm, done perfectly.
