More fantasy sports moutterings
Oct. 11th, 2002 11:21 amFor I am a fantasy sports ho.
I got myself two basketball teams, mainly because I really, really know nothing about it. Anyhow, I somehow managed to get John Stockton on both teams, which is a yay!! And an O'Neal, different ones but still, it's nice to see that some of the clan are famous.
Admittedly, we don't spell it the same way, but when's that ever mattered :)

General Happiness
Oct. 11th, 2002 06:21 pmHappiness is ... tickets to the Manic Street Preachers concert at the Nynex/MEN. Yes, I'm ridiculously easy to please.
You know how there is always the one band, the one true desert island disc band. Well, they are mine. Really. Their music has got me through some seriously bad times.
Admittedly they are seated tickets, and while some of my friends may say sitting is for wimps, for these sitting is required, I want to take it all in.
Haven't been so exited in years.

Did I mention I was sports mad? :)
Anyhow, around where I live, Rugby is the major sport. It's the only thing our town excels in, and we've just beaten our major rivals, it was derby day and we finally won.
But I'm not happy, I'm rather melancholic. I shall endevour to explain.
There's a player called Gary Connally, who used to play for us in the early 1990s. Now at that point Wigan won everything and he was starting to turn the tide, for the first time in some peoples' memories we might win. He was the best player that we had, he was wonderful.
And then he moved to them. Now Saints and Wigan are rivals, we don't like each other, and he went to them, so he got the usual Judas shouts.
Tonight was his last Rugby League game. And despite a raging hatred, I'm going to miss him.
Because he was great. Playing, attackingly, defensively, he was the whole package. But his courage was above all that. He was one of the strongest tacklers in the game, depite not having cruiciate ligament.
Really, he's had both cruciate ligaments taken out, they were that badly injured. You wouldn't know it from the way he played.
Anyway, he's moving to Rugby Union, which gets far more press coverage. So he could play a bad game to League standards, but it would be great in union terms, and he'll get far more money and press coverage, just because he switched codes.
And it's not fair.
I don't begrudge him the money, it just hurts that the minute a player switches over he gets everything he's deserved for years but hasn't got, because League is the working man's game, and union is the upper class' game.
