It's a Tarantino icon, with lots of thanks to
twistingflame for the picture.
Well last night I could have either been going out getting drunk or I could have stayed at home overanalysing a fictional character. Guess which I did.
I'd done my bit being sociable anyway, I went to see the fencing competition, Warwick beat us, I think (sorry, I got a little lost with the rules) and then I went to the Amnesty meeting.
I went out Tuesday night anyway, to the same bloody nightclub they always go out to. I came home early, partly because the smoke machine was making me choke and partly because everyone else was drunk and I was sober, and there's this one particular girl who is a nutcase when she drinks and I didn't want to be around for that.
Anyway, so guess who had hangovers. And guess who was the least sympathetic person ever. Sorry, it's beyond me to be overly sympathetic to people who bring it on themselves. Because yeah, I drink, but I know when to stop. People are idiots.
Discussing drinking and idiots - dear Jindrak, I would like to see your shiny ass on TV once a week so do you mind not getting into fights with Randy Orton. Because it's not good for you.
Yeah the fictional character I was overanalysing was Snape. Actually, I finally figured out who I see as Snape - Paul Darrow who played Avon in Blake's 7. Truth be told I see Avon as Snape but since he was the actor in question, I thought I'd better put him. Because Avon is sooooooo like Snape.
I heartily recommend Blake's 7 for anybody who likes good television and or sci-fi, because if you ignore the abysmal standard of the sets and the SFX (they were made for even less than Dr. Who) the characters were fantastic.
First you have Blake, the titular hero, except he isn't. He's all brave and derrerdoing and all that but the programme does make it plainly obvious that he's a nutty fanatic who cares more about the cause than about people.
His chief foil is Avon. Who is the least pleasent person ever to grace the television screen, but like a certain S. Snape is actually a good guy in deep disguise. Except that if it came down to you, him and survival, he'd kill you.
Then there's Jenna, who is a better pilot than any of the boys and is in fact pretty kick ass. She tends to take Blake's side in any argument.
After her there's Vila who is the stereotypical friendly crook and coward. Which is all he does but he does it with such style. His other main job is to be the butt of Avon's jokes and general helpmate. He's the Neville of the crew, except he's a fantastic crook.
And then there's Gan, Cally and a couple of others. And the best part is how they interact. Because Blake and Avon have this whole hate/hate, respect, anger, ideological problem. As in they can last two sentances without an argument.
And as for Snape
I must stop identifing with him. It's just that I was a dark, scruffy nerd that got picked on. And something about the way he gets stupidly angry at the oddest things. But yes, no matter what he's still a bastard.
I'm still confused as to why people are saying Sirius turned into an arsehole in this one. Because 1) he's not and 2) we've known since book 3 that he was a reckless idiot at times vis a vis the Whomping Willow incident. But of course in that book it was shown as just a prank gone wrong, while in OOTP it seen from his victim's perspective.
Oh and why despite being a Snape girl I don't think Sirius is a bastard, mainly because I'm a bit more forgiving and because Snape probably was equally vicious back.
I think it was POA that converted me into a Snape girl because before that he was merely cool whereas in that when he got introduced as this strange, awkward, nerdy, dark haired oddball I started to identify.
But yes thinking about it there's a couple of things that I want to know about various characters -
1) I want to know about Lupin's background. I don't know why but it intrigues me.
2) Whether Snape joined the Death Eaters as a spy, or whether he joined, then had second thoughts and became a spy. I know I prefer theory two but again I'm intrigued. Plus if he was the traitor referred to by Voldemort at the end of GOF how did he join the inner circle of the Death Eaters, well not that, more how did Dumbledore accept him back if he was indeed one of the inner circle because I'm imagining you don't get there by being nice to kittens.
3) Voldemort - okay you know Snape's a traitor, why haven't you got your revenge yet?
4) Are Hermionie's parents okay with her running off all summer and getting in danger. They appear to be the only people we never see anything of in the books.
5) What sort of crazy genetics are involved in the Black family? Sirius dark haired, Narcissa blonde.
6) Krum, what has Krum been doing? Sorry if I can't have Diggory I must have Krum.
7) Whatever are they going to do with Grawp? And if Hagrid is half giant, and that is how giants are, how on Earth did his mother and father ever meet?
8) So what other secrets does Dumbledore have up his sleeves? If I were Harry I would have flipped my lid at him before now. Also how do we know for certain that Harry is Prophecy boy and not Neville? Because if he's been getting that one wrong it's another black mark against Voldemort who is already getting to Bond villan levels of incompetance.
9) Are we going to get more of Phineus Nigellus because I want more.
10) Anyone laying bets on which Weasley brother is going to get killed first because law of averages, they're not all going to survive the next two books. My money's on Charlie. If she kills off Ron I will not be a happy bunny.
One friend thinks that Snape will actually turn out to be a bad guy, and be conducting the world's greatest triple cross. Either that or that will be part of the world's craziest quadruple cross.
And from what Mynx said, I really, really must see the POA trailer. Actually thinking of going to the cinema anyway but this'll just be extra reason. What I've decided to convert to being a 5 year old and get excited about everything.

Date: 2003-11-13 11:03 am (UTC)I can't tell you how loudly I squealed when I saw you mention one of my all-time favourite shows!!!! Of course, whilst doing your character summary, you left out my second-favourite character - Tarrant. I see him as the Randy Orton of the crew, really. A whole lot cockier and arrogan than is good for him. Avon, of course, was always my favourite, and everytime I think of him now, I picture
*so very happy now*

Date: 2003-11-14 02:48 am (UTC)The main reason I didn't mention Tarrant is because I still haven't seen enough of his seasons. (Yells at BBC for stopping the repeats in the middle of season 2)
