What do we think a late Victorian politician is likely to have studied at university?

Probably Classics, right? And then law/taking the bar. I believe some politicians also came up thru the military.

I can work with that. I was going to send him doing PPE but then I found out that while I had the right university (Oxford), they only brought that in in 1920. Then a quick wiki had everyone round them coming up through the military, as you said, which, while helpful for something else, doesn't work because frustratingly, this is for a throw away line saying "although he studied x, he spent a lot of time on chemistry."

Definitely Classics, though I think there were a few who studied maths! And Law, though early in the era it would have been through the Temples not the universities.

Good point about law. It's quite fun that it's not *that* long ago but some things are utterly different.

Classics works for the "and lots of secret chemistry" parts of the sentence.
