Title: Price Willingly Paid
Fandom: Marvelverse
Disclaimer: I don't own the characters, they themselves do. This is not fiction. No money being made from this.
Series: Soldier of Tomorrow
Characters: Bucky Barnes, Steve Rogers, Tony Stark
Rating/Warnings: Gen fic, spoilers for Captain America: Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War
Notes: Second part of my Allegiance swap AU. The original prompt say bad guys as good guys and vice versa. I have decided to have fun. The first part Out of the Ice is found at that link.
Summary: Any price Bucky can pay, he'd pay it for Steve.

He's standing next to Steve, holding him up, or the other way round, when Stark comes at them again.

Stark won't lay down, and they'll both be damned if they do either.

Bucky hadn't known Howard Stark as well as Steve had, but he still has this urge to tell Tony that it is neither of their faults that Howard hadn't beaten the value of friendship into him when Tony was a kid.

While everyone else was happy to blame Loki's staff for what they'd said on the helicarrier, Bucky is willing to admit that what he'd said did normally flash through his mind when dealing with Tony. Things like how much more Howard would have done with Tony's talent and the money he'd inherited and that Tony had been too old for the poor little rich boy act twenty years before Bucky had been defrosted.

Right now, he felt like adding that Tony didn't deserve Rhodey if he couldn't understand why Bucky was doing this.

Steve had joined the war the first time for everyone, but the second time, he'd joined the fighting from a safe, cushy billet with the USO to rescue Bucky. Of course Bucky's going to do anything he can to save Steve.

Now that Steve was back, if not quite himself, Bucky can see all the ways Steve would be so much better for the Avengers than Bucky ever could be because Steve wasn't Captain America because of the shield. It's everything else, decency and kindness, everything. And it's still there. Look how quickly Sam took to Steve.

Tony's got a brilliant mind, he'll get it, he just needs the time to understand that it wasn't Steve that killed Howard and Maria, it was Hydra, and a brainwashed Steve was just their tool.

Bucky's going to get them all that time, but to do it, he needs to get himself and Steve away from Tony and out of this wrecked building in the ass end of northern Sokovia. Bucky learnt to fight way before Schmidt experimented on him, before the metal arm, and he knows when a retreat is called for.

Steve blocks the next blast with the shield and the bounce back knocks Tony down long enough that they can get out.

Tony's tough enough that even taken out at the knee, he's still trying to get up. And he's still shouting. "That arm doesn't belong to you. You don't deserve it! Howard and Maria Stark's son made that arm and you are using it to save their killer."

Bucky figures that's fair, and swings his hair out of the way to start to unbuckle the arm.

"What are you doing?" asks Steve.

"The man's got a point." Bucky takes the arm off, leaving it in the snow between them and Tony, and Steve moves around to that side. Steve's still moving as he blocks the blasts Tony sends their way. It's clear Tony's doing it more for something to do with his anger than any real attempt at hitting them or stopping them from leaving.

Every blast knocked off a little more of the black matte paint Hydra painted all over the shield. Every moment, Bucky gets a little more of Steve back.

His arm for Steve, his life with the Avengers for Steve, it's all worth it.

End note: The "I could do this all day" bit and how much Steve in that moment looks and moves like pre-serum Steve is my favourite non-T'Challa part of Civil War, so I couldn't help but want to play with that scene in this AU.
