Yes. Just yes. And even more yes.

Luckily I went with Sal who is a fellow member of the Johnny Depp rocks school of thought. Because he was the best thing about the film. Really Captin Jack was wonderful and interesting and just yes, savvy?

On the topic of savvy, OMG I want to hug the scriptwriter for choosing a word that fitted. Because it's just the sort of anglo-french word that would be used by buccaneers.

Plus parts were delightfully cheesy. The good cheese.

And Mr. Gibbs. I was so glad that they didn't kill him off. (Plus he was bound to be good, the actor that plays him is regularly fantastic on-screen)

That's another thing in it's favour. No angst (or too little to mention) A good pirate flick should have little angst. Too much hurly-burly and rum for that.

I am also glad that the two comedy crew of the Black Pearl survived. I am well aware they were there for comedy alone. This is a fine pirate film tradition.

I am also glad that Igg and Ook the two redcoats survived.

Am I alone in liking Norrington? I mean, normally in this sort of film, they go out of their way to make the 'fiance' mad, bad or wicked. He wasn't any of them. Okay so he was a little too hidebound by the rules but he was still quietly adorable, especially in that last scene. (Oh and Jack Davenport is a good actor)

Pretty much the same goes for Elizabeth's Dad. He was rather understanding of it all. Plus the scene with the arm had me in stitches. (Jonathan Pryce also rocks)

Geoffrey Rush is da man as well though. I mean, I ended up feeling distinctly sorry for Barbarossa. I realised that by convention he had to die, but still.

BTW loved the little overheard bit of two of the Black Pearl crew having a table laid out and saying they should decide now what they wanted to eat when they could taste again. I hope those two survived as well, I don't think they did though.

Actually as a by the bye, if Will's Dad was on the ship when they stole the Aztec gold and hence was a member of the swimming undead, surely tying cannons to him and letting him drown wouldn't work. Or did they explode him first?

And now for the heaps and heaps of praise that need to be sent to the director, fight choreographer, stunt crew, editing crew, GGI peeps and sundry backstage types whose job titles I don't know. Because the fight scenes kicked ass. Note to various film-makers - this is how you use CGI and integrate it. Plus while the human skeletons didn't scare me, the monkey one did.

I loved the fight scene at the beginning between Jack and Will, and the sword fight at the end with Jack and Barbarossa was a technical marvel. I kiss whoever's feet.

Other things I liked included them not giving Jack Sparrow, sorry Captain Jack, a love interest. There is only one love in that man's life and a fine ship she is too.

And everyone exaggerating everyone else's tales.



So in case no one guessed, I liked it. I liked it a lot.

I also come bearing films recs - if you liked this you might want to check out 'The Crimson Pirate' and 'Captain Blood', there are certain similarities in stories. Except of course the curse.

The pre-film ads in the cinema are getting wierder.

Oh and Stas, from the clip they showed (which is so not the 12A it was rated) of American Pie 3, they're using Laid to promote it. Except it doesn't sound like James.

I loved him and his awkward well-meaningness.

And I believe it is James...they used it in the ads for the first one, but it wasn't on the soundtrack. If anyone else is covering them I will declare blasphemy and attack with teeth bared and sharp objects ready.

...and after checking I see that someone named Matt Nathanson is responsible. God damned kids.

You're not alone in liking Norrington, but I think the majority of my liking is due to the fact that he's played by Jack Davenport.

As for Will's dad thing. My friend wondered the same thing.

I did do a double take when I saw that it was Jack Davenport because woah, I wasn't expecting it. On the subject have you ever seen 'This Life' with him in it, I get the feeling you might like it.

Or Ultraviolet if you're in the sci-fi/fantasy/horror mood.

They shouldn't leave things open like that.

So did I! I was like, "Whoa!" too! I have to be honest. I've only seen him in one thing, and that was "The Talented Mr. Ripley". But I got "Ultraviolet" on my to-rent list.

I really do have to watch 'The Talented Mr. Ripley' one of these days. Ultraviolet good, very good. Especially ep 1, 5 and 6. As for 'This Life', it was 'QAF' before 'QAF', you know, fresh, shiny a must-see and something you knew would end up being a stone cold classic. Plus it has the best ending of any series ever.
