On recommendation from
ioplokon I have ended up watching Impact.
Have some decidedly disjointed thoughts.
The main one is that it feels sort of retro, like early TNA without that je ne sais WTF?! that make TNA, TNA. I have no idea how to deal with TNA that doesn't do TNA things.
Aiden Prince vs Jake Crist - Get rid of that finisher immediately young man (Aiden Prince) because you are going break your neck. (More seriously, I think Aiden Prince will be good just needs seasoning.)
Konan!!
Why yes, skinny Gambit cosplayer (Ace Austin), I am thoroughly impressed (and bless commentary for trying to convince me that he's good looking. Failing mind you, but bless 'em they're trying). Scumbag Gambit for the win! Or the loss by % damage but, you know.
I see that TNA still gives the best tunes to the villains.
Okay, I love Josh Matthews - "There's a theme of people coming out for commentary, we should probably get rid of the spare headset."
Much though I like the idiot weed bros, I don't know what the purpose of that was.
Su Yung appears to be both retro and awesome.
Desi Hit Squad is either the best, or the worst, name I've ever heard for a tag team.
I suspect Stone Rockwell is just a local "bonus feature" but him, I want to see more of. (In the MotoGP, they're called Wildcards, and I am tempted to use that.)

Date: 2019-08-10 08:23 pm (UTC)OMG yeah, Price really scared me on those reverse ranas. I think he is maybe used to being the much smaller man - it seems trickier to do that stuff vs someone who is about your height.
I don't think fake!Gambit is necessarily a looker but I absolutely believe he is the kind of guy Alisha Edwards might be into. Well, at least it's more believable than when he thought she was getting with Tommy Dreamer... Needless to say, I'm invested in this drama, especially since Alisha on the indies (as Alexxis) is easily one of the best heels around. And regardless of context, just very pleased to have the chance to watch a Werewolf vs Terrible Magician match.
As for weed bros, they have always had a secret weed/sitcom clubhouse (obvs riffing on That 70s Show) and ever since RVD showed up, we were waiting for them to get a segment with him. But instead like Moose and Scarlett Bordeaux and LAX and GAIL KIM?! Would show up. This was the final payoff for a like, months-long bit.
Su is awesome! Impact legitimately has a whole supernatural side to storytelling that they completely commit to and it works so well!
Glad you're enjoying Impact! It's far from perfect, but probably one of the most fun weekly TV wrestling shows running right now.
PS : don't worry, they absolutely have TNA moments every few months!
Edit: oh and you're right that Stone Rockwell is local talent but Ontario is kind of Impact's new base, so they go back to tape there a lot, so you should see more of him than the average local figure (esp since they clearly like him).

Date: 2019-08-12 06:11 pm (UTC)It's more, I heard Austin, Ace of aces, expect Austin Aries, see skinny boy instead. Who does do flippy flippy in a leather duster and throws cards and I'd have been sold anyway and then out comes the expandable bo, and all attempts at not making Gambit jokes vanished.
Weed bros seem adorable and I look forward to watching them.
Stone Rockwell looks like he's escaped from a Mountie recruitment advert from the 60s and it's such a distinctive look that I can see it working.

Date: 2019-08-12 09:45 pm (UTC)Impact is working their way towards like, a whole X-Men team. (I don't know how much you know about Brian Cage but... the dude loves Wolverine, and Dez of the Weed Broz is aka Dezmond Xavier) I definitely think Gambit from X-men + street magician + RooshV is a pretty good formula for a sleazy heel character though. I also like the continuity of all of the manipulators on the roster recognizing that Eddie is currently the World's Most Psychologically Vulnerable Man and trying to get into his head.
Stone Rockwell is delightful! One of the things I really like with Impact is that the shows are just like, fun!

Date: 2019-08-21 02:41 am (UTC)I'm really excited to see Su & Rosemary back in the action - I feel like the Supernatural Knockouts Division kind of got put on the back-burner a bit to set up the heel turns for Kiera, Madison, and Taya which is understandable but... It's time to get back to that!
I'm also super-pumped for the upcoming Mexico shows!
