You know how when this meme is so late, it's either been a really good start of the year or a really bad one, this has been a mostly good but really busy one.

1) Was 2018 a good year for you?

Yes, I think. Kept the job, enjoyed it, had a poster accepted at a major conference. So far, so good.

2) What was your favourite moment of the year?

New job wins, I think.

3) What was your least favourite moment of the year?

I got embarrassingly drunk on the first night of the year which meant the rest of the year automatically went less terribly awfully.

4) Where were you when 2018 began?

London

5) Who were you with?

L

6) Where will you be when 2018 ends? / Where were you when 2018 ended?

St Helens, celebrating the last new years in the old house.

7) Who will you be with when 2018 ends? / Who were you with when 2018 ended?

The Mothership. C had gone to bed early, and then Mum went up early too because we were planning on going over to Yorkshire the day after. Reader, unsurprisingly, we didn't.

8) Did you keep your new years resolution of 2018?

No, but there will be further adventures in tidying this year.

9) Do you have a new years resolution for 2018?

Tidy the flat!!

10) Did you fall in love in 2018?

No.

11) If yes, with who?
12) If yes, do they know?
13) Do you regret it?
14) Did you breakup with anyone in 2018?

No.

15) Did you make any new friends in 2018?

Same as last year, a few new colleagues, a couple of new fencers.

16) Who are your favourite new friends?

I've really liked getting to know I.

17) What was your favourite month of 2018?

One of the long summer months. I am creature of the sun.

18) Did you travel outside of the US UK in 2018?

Yup, Sweden and Austria.

19) How many different states countries did you travel to in 2018?

As well as Sweden and Austria, I hit the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany getting too and from them. Which did lead to one of the most fun bits of the year when I saw the Brussels Airlines plane with the Smurf colour scheme.

It's the little things.

20) Did you lose anybody close to you in 2018?

Possibly. Sort of. The cousin and a different cousin's wife weren't close to me, and, you know that thing that parents do where they throw that sort of info in at the end of a long discussion about shopping trolley at the local supermarket ... yeah on both occasions my Mum pulled that stunt, so I am not even entirely sure when one of the two died.

21) Did you miss anybody in the past year?

The Leicester lot, although the "new" Leicester lot are also love. Also, holy moly, my academic greatgrandchildren are graduating.

22) What was your favourite movie that you saw in 2018?

Into the Spiderverse or Black Panther. No, you can't make me choose.

23) What was your favourite song from 2018?

Is it just me or did mainstream music in 2018 suck?

The nearest I have to a choice is "Shotgun" by George Ezra - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aAiVsqfbn5g if only because it's catchy.

24) What was your favourite record from 2018?

Count 2018 as another year where I missed a lot of music.

25) How many concerts did you see in 2018?

See previous. I almost managed Ash at the O2 but was on holiday.

26) Did you have a favourite concert in 2018?

N/A

27) What was your favourite book of 2018?

I have lots of love for the XKCD book.

28) Did you drink a lot of alcohol in 2018?

Not as much as expected. I have learnt how to say no. I do worry that, despite that, coworker N thinks I'm a lush. And there's no good response to that, because the actual truth, that it's no-one's fault that she's a lightweight, only emphasises that well I do drink slightly too much sometimes.

29) Did you do a lot of drugs in 2018?

No.

30) How many people did you sleep with in 2018?

0

31) Did you do anything you are ashamed of this year?

New Years drinking misbehaviour. So far so good on the never again.

32) What was the worst lie someone told you in 2018?

People have been remarkably honest. One of our sales department owes me a talk though ;)

33) Did you treat somebody badly in 2018?

Only two people, and they both started it.

34) Did somebody treat you badly in 2018?

Not really. Fencers need to learn to plan ahead and work colleague N can't help it. As in, I recognise that either her childhood was emotionally abusive or she is a chronic liar (um, that sounds bad but my boy cousin is and therefore I am of the trust but verify on these things) and therefore she acts out and cannot help it.

35) How much money did you spend in 2018?

Ignoring the emergency laptop replacement, not as much as I thought I had. I do owe Mum money though.

36) What was your proudest moment of 2018?

Getting my name on an abstract at one of the big conferences in my new field ;)

37) If you could go back in time to any moment of 2018 and change something, what would it be?

There's a few things that I would have changed but most of it went okay.

38) What are your plans for 2019?

Fence more, get back in the top 100 in the UK. Go to the gym more often, drop *that* 20 kg. Improve my deadlift and squat. These are all infinitely doable.

My Year In Fic

Fics

An Encounter At A Strange Border, 15 rated gen Being Human fic - https://redfiona99.dreamwidth.org/1165379.html Or that fic with the interesting set of notes ;)

When Chambermaids Were More Amenable, 15 rated RDJ-verse Holmes/Adler smut - https://redfiona99.dreamwidth.org/1159276.html

The Judas Kiss, 15 rated 9th Doctor/Master fic - https://redfiona99.dreamwidth.org/1146089.html

The Buy In, NC-17 rated Trance fic, which is in keeping with the film. Please heed that as a content warning. - https://redfiona99.dreamwidth.org/1134567.html

Not as many as I'd want but they're all solid fics. I look forward to there being more this year.

My favourite story this year: An Encounter At A Strange Border, it's the nearest one to what's on the page being what was in my head.

My best story this year: Judging by response, "When Chambermaids Were More Amenable" but it also the most accessible of the 4. Two of them are very much either small fandoms and/or weird fic (being honest, I can get rid of the or) and the other may just have been a wrong time and place situation.

Story most under-appreciated by the universe, in my opinion: Even more so than usual, I really can't complain. One of them is the most Red Fiona-y story ever (the Being Human one), two more were very late prompt responses and the other one is also gleefully written-for-fun fic. I am pleased anyone liked any of them.

Most fun story: When Chambermaids Were More Amenable is the only fun fic of the four.

Most sexy story: Of the three fics with sex in, When Chambersmaids Were More Amenable is the only one with sexy sex. Which is deliberate, because The Buy In is about horrible things and The Judas Kiss is all angry and melancholy.

Story with single sexiest moment: I love the detail about Irene's stockings in When Chambermaids Were More Amenable.

Hardest story to write: It's got to be Encounter on a Strange Border, because there was a four-year gap between getting half-way and finishing it. I was stuck on how to get the Mitchells home.

"Holy crap, that's *wrong*, even for you" story: The Buy In. There's a reason I went with dubious consent, because that thing is dubious in several different directions.

Story that shifted my own perceptions of the characters: I knew I felt strongly about how different Pilot!Mitchell and Series!Mitchell were, but I wasn't aware of quite how peculiar I was about Hal also being a Mitchell variant (in ways other than being the replacement vampire) and how that could've, maybe would've played out.

Biggest disappointment: I'm reasonably happy with how these turned out. Maybe I could have stressed the faint undercurrent of attraction of Franck for Simon, which was what Simon was picking up on, and Franck would deny existed a bit more. There's a few hints of it in the final fic but I could, maybe, have pushed it a bit harder. I was aiming for subtle! I may have hit non-existant.

Biggest surprise: I've been working on most of these that long that I don't think I had any surprises left for me.

Most unintentionally telling story: I can give you directions to the Premier Inn that the Doctor and the Master visit in "The Judas Kiss". It's in Manchester and I've stayed there.
