The Jungle Book

The new Jungle Book is technically excellent. It's special effects are as good Avatar's thought they were. There's only a couple of scenes where you can tell which bits are "real" and which bits are animated. It might even be worth shelling out the extra money to see it in 3D.
The child playing Mowgli is excellent, and convincing. Lupita Nyong'o is fantastic as Raksha, and almost made me cry. They made Shere Khan seem terrifying (even if he is right about some things). I loved how they subtly they made Bagheera older than Shere Khan. Bagheera is also my favourite, but Bagheera is always my favourite.
Turning King Louie into a mobster was an *interesting* choice and I refuse to believe it's accidental that he starts out as Colonel Kurtz doing the 'I'm going to make you an offer you can't refuse' thing. He's another character who is a lot more terrifying in this version. See also Kaa. Who is a mightily long snake.
Replicating the book thing Disney used to do made me smile.
I still don't get why they did it, and could have done without the songs (particularly 'I Wanna Be Like You') but it is worth watching.
