An example of a front page, although sadly it is from Wolverine and Gambit and not an X-men mag, same layout though.
About Wolverine -
"The world knows him as Wolverine, but his true name is Logan - a mutant gifted with enhanced senses and a 'healing factor' which protects his body from serious harm. One of the deadliest fighters on Earth, he also possesses razor-sharp retractable claws."
The next bit might be a bit of a spoiler for X-2 so I won't put it up.
About Gambit-
"Remy LeBeau was discovered as an infant on the streets of New Orleans. He was adopted into the LeBeau family; members of the ancient Thieves' Guild of the city. He was trained in the arts of thievery and physical combat from childhood, becoming a master of both practises. However he was forced to flee his home as a youth after marrying Bella Donna, a daughter of the rival Assassins' Guild.
Gambit has the mutant ability to charge objects with explosive kinetic energy which he can throw with devastating accuracy. His favoured weapons are playing cards - a fitting symbol of his gambler's nature..."
And that's pretty much all you need to know. And then they outline the plot of the story, such as has already gone by. I think it's mainly so the writers can remember what they've already written because they tend to randomly forget stuff.
If you've watched the cartoon or the film, you can easily follow the comic.
