The laptop issue turned out to be a hard-drive failure so I'm going to have to get a new laptop. See also expenses I could have done without, because in between the leak, the tooth thing (which I suspect is about to gain yet another add on but I'm going to see if I can convince the dentist to chuck it in for free) and the laptop my contingency fund is about tapped out. Although that's what it's there for so I shouldn't complain too much.
I'm looking at either a Dell or a Toshiba from PC World. I'd like to buy from PC World because I like the idea of supporting a shop so when I have a tech problem I have somewhere where I can walk in and go "help!" but when equivalent spec laptops are ~ £100 ($169) cheaper at Dell, that becomes an expensive and unsupportable luxury.
The one advantage to the death of the laptop is that I've now got the time to do all of the things I keep not doing because they're less fun than being online. Noticably, tidying the flat. Otherwise my mother will murder me when she comes down after the fencing.
Also, I finally watched "The Case of the Silk Stockings" which is a Holmes I've had on home-taped video for ages but never got round to watching.
Like I said, Rupert Everett makes a good Holmes and I like Ian Harte as Watson. It's well shot, well made and generally solid. The plot could do with some work because when you rely on the answer being "the villain is twins" there is something wrong. Although they did give Watson something to do.
Also in their favour when they go for the stupid plot of "the villain is twins", when the twins are played by a young Michael Fassbender, during that part of his career where he played nothing but villains. He was mostly doing that thing where he wasn't blinking enough and occasionally raving. I jest but again, another solid performance.
They also had Helen McCrory as the future Mrs. Watson (a Mrs. Vandeleur, which was one of the many Holmes jokes for the geeks out there), who won Holmes over by talking about psycho-sexual pathology and lending him her copy of Psychopathia Sexualis. She is adorable.
So there's one scene where Rupert Everett looms over Michael Fassbender, and I'm like "that takes some doing". It turns out that Rupert Everett is a long, tall drink of water at 6'4", while Fassbender is 6'1". Which led in turn to the logical question of "wait a minute, how tiny is James McAvoy then?" because I know he's not that tall but. Anyway, with the usual "according to Google" disclaimer, he's 5'7". Which might explain the way they shot a few scenes in the DOFP trailer.
