Where you can see what it's aiming for and it's failing miserably. As opposed to that other thing it does, where it fails miserably and you can't figure out what they're up to (the Clare Lynch debacle*). I'm not sure what's worse.

I feel quite bad about using that as my LJ cut because everyone was trying their best. Any failure was not due to the participants. They were trying their hardest and some were even successful (Roode 'n' Aries, Bully Ray, even Dixie Carter managed to be convincing) but the thing as a whole didn't work.

The opening match was exactly as solid as you'd expect from Kaz 'n' Daniels, Storm and Hardy. And then there was a good X-Division match, where, you know, I hated Kenny King and cheered for Christian York the way I was supposed to. Which is unusual in TNA. Then there was a good women's match (I hate Velvet Sky's new ring-gear).

So far, so good.

And then the plot(s) took over.

I mean, there were things I liked - Spike Dudley for instance, and Bully Ray's happy face, and Sting being himself. And then there were things that worked, like Dixie and Brooke Hogan's heart to heart. Soapy but functional.

Then there was the thing I loved which was Aries and Roode being themselves. I mean, there's that horrible thing where I agree with the bad guys in the equation, but ... I love them, and I assume it's the set up for Chavo + Hernandez vs Roode + Aries, in the absence of anything else for your glorious tag-team champions to do.

And then there was the wedding, which went mysteriously well for a wrestling wedding. Until, of course, it didn't. Except I'm not sure how that changes anything. We can be reasonably sure that Tazz isn't any of the masked miscreants because, I'm sorry Tazz, old buddy, old pal, you've got quite a distinctive outline, and none of them had it. Possibly he's supposed to be black masked leader, but I don't think so, so you've got yet another meaningless swerve. Cue anguished and unending sighing at this always being TNA's Achilles heel.

*I still think that was an attempt to turn AJ Styles heel that just didn't work.

I saw an episode of Batman: The Brave And The Bold, and if it hadn't been for the character design, the voice acting and the script writing, I'm sure I would have liked it. But when you have the combined forces of Race A-ghul, who must be Ra's al Ghul's stupider, more easily defeated brother, a character design for Aquaman than makes him look more like Oliver Green than their version of Oliver Green, and dialogue that sounds like it was written by a robot who has never heard a human speak, when it doesn't sound like it was written by a 50 year old who has heard that the youth of today exist and they have slang.

It's a horrible mess.

(And yes, I know I was spoilt by Batman: The Animated Series being the Bat-cartoon of my youth, with it's beautiful designs and excellent voice acting and the dialogue and the ability to actually pronounce the character's names and I shouldn't hold not being David Warner or Kevin Conroy against people but ... )
