Nadine Dorries withdrew her bill. So, yay, victory, but I think this highlights the need for constant vigilance.

Got into a discussion with someone on Twitter about it (sorry [livejournal.com profile] wishtheworst) and I really do think it was one of those things were there were irreconcilable differences, because her point was that maybe encouraging teenagers to think that abstinence is possible is not the end of the world, and I said, fine, I see your point, but then, surely, it ought to be taught to both genders. Then she said 'yes, but teen pregnancy is a problem that hits women harder', and you know when you're like, 'I see your point but bzuh!what!' because yes, she's not wrong, but it takes two to tango, and if the guy had said no, then there is no baby either. I don't think some people are even aware that what they're saying basically amounts to 'we'd all be fine if women would just keep their legs crossed'.

There's also quite an interesting blog post here about how the whole sex ed thing links in with the welfare budget cuts and how, for all David Cameron is all 'I believe in the big society' and 'We're all in it together' the changes he are making are hitting the disadvantaged in British society the most - http://saltandcaramel.com/index.php/2012/01/20/britain-teenage-mums-abstinence-and-nadine-dorries/

This week's 'This Week' (I-player link here - http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b01b4wmk/This_Week_19_01_2012/ ) has another good example, with Francesca Martinez (who I had such the crush on when I was younger [she convinced me to watch Grange Hill, no mean feat], and it is pleasing to see that she is ageing wonderfully well) making the point that reducing the amount of money that disabled people get, money which enables them to get out and about is going to do nothing good in the long run. She also makes a strong point that there's almost no representation in the media of disabled people and people like her are only wheeled on for things like this.
