Politics, Football and 2 Memes

David Cameron has been at it again. This time, in the tried and tested way of politicians who are trying to look tough, he's decided to pick on British Muslims.

Apparently, UK Islamic groups (particularly those with government funding) are not doing enough to discourage extremists. I'm not sure exactly what more he actually wants them to do but solid ideas were never his strong point.
So of course, he then came out with the equally traditional soundbite that Britain needs a stronger national identity. What I'd like to know is why this identity seems to be, without fail, the sort of identity a right-wing, straight, white, Church of England worshipper of a middle class income and social background would choose? Surely those of us who are not all of those things at once out-number the people who are. Why do they get so much of a say in things?

I am pleased that Liverpool won. I am also pleased that the Liverpool fans gave Torres hell and the players didn't. I'm sorry, but I don't have it in me to feel sorry for someone who is paid >£30,000 a week getting shouted at by people he can't quite hear.
I think the timing of it is what's caused all the hoo-ha, because he seemed to be perfectly willing to stay when things were bad, but not when things have started looking up. It's very strange.
Admittedly I think it's a good bit of business for Liverpool because Torres is so injury-prone and strikers don't get less injury-prone with age. I can envision him being Michael Owen all over again.

Second Meme - Give me two characters and I will tell you why s/he loves another character. And to be clear, the love does not have to be romantic. It can be familial or friendshippy or comrades-in-arms or whatever.
