Saw Eragon last night.

Some important points:

- baby dragons are the cutest things ever.
- was it just me or did Bram have 'doomed' written in large letters above his head. Cool though he undoubtedly was. I did of course wibble during this. It was the whole thing of him finally getting to ride a dragon again.
- thinking about that, exactly what do the dragons get out of this arrangement?
- Durza may well have been the most ridiculously cool bad guy seen on film for quite some time. I still have a distinct belief that he was in fact the other dragon rider that Bram killed but apparently I'm wrong. I'm still interested by the concept of the shade so I fear that this will have to be added to the 'to buy' pile.
- Before someone points out that this is largely made up of a mad melange of LOTR and Star Wars, I don't much care, because it had oomph, and I'm willing to forgive the heavy use of sources.
- John Malkovich was the weak link on the acting front, which given that all of the young parts were filled by actors from the fabled 'see look at my face, this is my serious actorly look' school of acting is saying something. He was awful though.
- His dragon, however, looks like one mean hombre.
- Eragon's dragon, all grown up is quite close to being the coolest, most adorable thing ever also. I'm very fond of her.
- This wasn't so much a slightly cheesy film as much as it was a honking great slab of parmasan. Some of the lines were riddled with cheese. But they played it straight so it kind of worked.
- Is it really bad that I'm not buying the humanoid romance (since I think Arya is an elf or something) because Eragon is so blatently more in love with his dragon. I also think that there is something going on with the elf-princess that we haven't been told about yet.

I enjoyed it a lot, in case that wasn't obvious.

*I have been assured that Dungeons and Dragons, the film, is not good, but I've not seen it yet and live with the deep, worrying belief that I'd enjoy it anyway. This is why it pains me to dislike Robin Hood, because I should like it and I'm not that picky.
