(Sorry about the title, I couldn't help myself.)
It's not just the weather finally taking a turn for the autumnal. Although the weather in Newcastle continues to be far more reasonable than advertised.
I am at least 9/10ths humbug and would ban Christmas decorations and promotions being put up before US Thanksgiving or the start of advent (whichever comes first, see I can be reasonable). Because Christmas promotions should not be up at the end of September.
The best/worst and definitely the first case was in The Works. Small child is going 'Mummy I want'. Mother is going, 'no way dear' when the shop assistant comes out with "well Santa is coming soon." Mother shoots the most perfect "you are really not helping" look at the assistant, and I try to distract small child, who is now in full on Christmas binge mode, by distracting the shop assistant.
Being in fandom, the other early sign is Yuletide letters. I don't Yuletide (mostly because my family's definition of a good Christmas is one where no-one dies, no-one walks out on their husbands and no-one is in hospital), but I really love reading everyone's letters. It's so nice to read other peoples's enthusiasm and it's a fun way of finding new media to consume.
