I watched Jonah Hex. In it, one of the villains sings an Irish folk song and I just could not place it. I felt I knew it but not quite what he was singing.
It turns out, there’s a reason it’s not quite, because the version I know best is the Dropkick Murphy’s version which has a different name, and changes more than half the lyrics.
This is what 'Lanigan's Ball' is supposed to sound like (with the usual caveat of there is no 'one true' version of any folk song):
And, as a bonus, have a version of Spancil Hill which I found while looking for (F)Lanigan’s Ball.
I love the song anyway but oh Shane MacGowan’s singing. It’s not perfect, it’s not in tune, he’s not singing all the words and it is still beautiful.
