(TW for suicide)

(Also spoilers for Small World, Out of Time and Children of Earth)

It's when he gets into the car with John in 'Out of Time'. Because Jack's tried to dissuade him from committing suicide, and realises that there is nothing he can say or do to stop John so he decides that he's not letting him die alone, and gets into the car with him.

It's just so very Jack.

Because, obviously, no-one else can do that for John, but it's the way that Jack does try to help people, and tries to do the right thing even if it's not the best thing, and his own peace of mind and survival always comes last on his list of priorities.

Which we see at the end of Small World. I am deeply bemused by people who don't get why he lets the girl join the fairies at the end. On the one hand, you have a girl who is deeply unhappy in her life with a possibly abusive family, who wants to join the fairies. On the other hand, you have a set of beings from before recorded time who will destroy the world if she doesn't join them. I see nothing wrong with letting her join them.

Which sets up the sacrifice at the end of Children of Earth. Because that's what makes Jack a hero. He does something terrible because the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few. And despite how terrible the thing is, it's the right(er) thing to do, and that's the beautiful, terrifying thing about Jack.
