Some Random Film Comments

The Sweeney is worse. It seems to totally miss both the spirit and the charm of the show and be a terrible film on its own merits, or lack thereof.
The Jim Cazaviel version of the Count of Monte Cristo should have been so much better. It is not Cazaviel's fault, because gives a damn decent performance in several scenes, and is doing his best (he's also one of the few actors I can believe when he's railing against God. They could have done with more of this.), and Richard Harris is probably as close to the Abbe as you are ever going to get, but they mess with the plot, and the glorious resolution to the excessively convoluted plot is rushed. Horribly rushed.
