TNA and the Fan Fiction Meme

Also, a separate TNA ( rant )
Day 13 – Do you prefer canon or fanon when you write? Has writing fanfic for a fandom changed the way you see some or even all of the original source material?
Canon all the way. I want the characters I write to be accurate to their "real" selves. It doesn't mean that there isn't fanon I like (see my tumblr tag for more - http://brightnshinythings.tumblr.com/tagged/fanon-I-approve-of) but it tends to be stuff that isn't covered by the canon. For an example, unless the show ever definitively says otherwise, Sherlock and Lestrade met in rehab. Because that makes sense, and there's that scene in Study In Pink that makes sense that way and yes, I am more than a little attached to this ;)
I'm not sure my own has, there's fic written by other people that has. I'd really like to recommend
selenak's stories here because she does a fine line in under-explored characters and situations.
