Jul. 16th, 2003 09:47 pmSo yeah, the ever shortening off season is kind of over, and the friendlies, pre-season training, and the pre-pre-pre-pre rounds of the Champions' League have begun.
And the take-overs, transfers etc have come to a head.
So where does this leave my teams
Villa - We have a new manager (David O'Leary) who should be better than the last two, provided the players don't start sulking again. Because of him they might have signed the best young goalkeeper in England (Paul Robinson, who is quite good) and several of the other players have promised to stay and stop sulking.
On off the pitch matters, along with Chelsea being bought by a Russian billionaire, Villa is being targetted by a Venuzeualan billionaire, and two little old ladies. In concert. This could only happen to Villa.
Forest - due to financial pressures they've had to sell their entire mid-field. Thank you very much other teams who have basically fucked up our next couple of seasons. And to think, they nearly got promoted last year.
Wednesday - SNAFU and FUBAR apply as normal. They buy players, players are lousy. Other clubs buy the players, and then the players become world beaters (Darko Kovacevic I am looking at you). Bugger.
In other news, Manchester United have bought an American goalie. His name is Tim Howard and he is reputed to be very good. And he's a nice guy too by all accounts. He's also got the traditional 'overcame great difficulty story', he has a mild form of Tourette's Syndrome.
He says it doesn't affect him, and so I think he'll be fine. Although I do worry about him, because if he makes a mistake the fans will be extremely offensive. Not wishing to be rude but MLS is not a big thing in America, whereas over here it's a borderline religion. So people are more worked up about it, and if you get football fans, beer, a mistake and an easy target (not to mention he'll be playing for the hated Man Utd) the results will not be nice. So the short form is I wish him a lot of luck, because he'll need it.
