Fandom Survey (feel free to ignore)
Sep. 21st, 2002 11:19 pmFandom Survey
Pinched from just about everyone, since it's doing the rounds, but actively stolen from Frala.
How long have you known about/read/written fanfiction?
- known, two and a half years
- read, two and a half years
- written, two years minus two months (which would be about 22 months)
What fandom(s) do you read/write/are you involved in?
- Read - anything and everything, except Bat-slash. Nothing against it's writers, it just Batman was my thing since I was about 3-4
-Write - um mainly wrestling, two LOTR, two (okay one and a half plus an unkillable bunny) Harry Potter, plus one Star Wars and one DragonBall Z.
-Involved - as in actively, then just wrestlingslash.
Who is/are your favourite character(s)?
-Not sure.
Do you identify with certain characters? Which one(s)?
- Depends on my mood, and who I'm writing and why.
What type/genre of fanfic do you read/write?
- slash most of the time, but I think I'm a gen writer who got misled, because everything that's not wrestleslash (except the DBZ story) is gen fic.
Why do you read/write fanfiction? Please give details!
- Because it's what I do. (Don't expect un-pretentiousness when I've just read a thing about Flaubert) He said, that everyone does what they have to, in fact need to do. If I didn't read and write I would go stir crazy.
Do you read official novel adaptations of TV shows? If you do, how do they compare? Please give details.
- sometimes. How do they compare? It depends. Normally they give little details that they didn't have time for in the show, but sometimes the writing can be a bit hard to get through.
What are your favorite subgenres and why?
- Fluff. I'm a fluff sort of person. Nice happy endings, no characters being tortured, well all but one don't, and he tends to deserve it.
Is there any kind of fan fiction you wouldn't read?
- incest fic because I don't understand it. Rape fic because it makes me uncomfortable (I have mentioned I'm a little fluffy person)
PART 2
Do you prefer to read fanfiction online or in zines?
- online
Are you a member of a mailing list?
- a couple
If yes, do you participate actively on the list or do you prefer to 'lurk'?
- Normally I yammer, but I'm a lurker on some.
How actively are you involved in your fandom(s)?
- I read it all the time, but I'm not the world's most active poster.
Do you know other fans personally?
- other than through online stuff like LJs, not at all.
Do you have friends who read/write fanfiction? If yes, how many?
- Only online.
Do you talk about fanfiction with your friends and/or family?
- No way on earth, even in a parallel universe.
How intensely are you involved with fanfiction/the fan community? (time, effort, etc.)
- I don't know
Do you attend conventions? If you do, how often?
- No, no time, no money.
PART 3/1 - READERS
Do you send feedback regularly? If not, what does motivate you to send feedback?
- I try to, it just tends to be late. Really late.
Do you like to read AU stories?
- Yeah. So long as no one behaves massively out of character.
PART 3/2 - WRITERS
How important is feedback to you?
- I like getting it, but I don't mind if my long things get little.
Would you write even if you didn't get any?
- Yup, see the why do I write answer.
Do you reply to every feedback/fanmail you get?
- I try to, but sometimes I'm very late with it.
Do you have your stories beta'd before you post them? If you do, do you think the comments/suggestions of a beta reader help you to improve your writing style?
- No, because I'm dreadfully shy when it comes to asking for things, and I'm certain most of mine don't deserve it.
In your favorite fandom, what are the major differences between canon and fanon?
- Some of them get landed with the super-femmy stereotype.
Have you ever worked as a beta reader?
No. Mainly because I'm not certain what it entails. Plus, stylisticly, I'm not that good. And all my spellings are the British way, and I'm far too in love with long sentances and commas. I could go on.
If you beta, how frequently do you do that?
What is your primary motivator for accepting a beta reading assignment?
Provide any more details below on why you choose to be a beta reader.
-see above
