Remember that the mass media, including the music media, have far too much time and money on their hands and not enough brains. They thrive on creating hoopla and enthusiasm, not on saying, "Eh, they were okay." Their job (no matter what they think their job really is), every one of them, is to convince people to buy more recorded music, so they apply the same techniques used by the people who market any other product, from sports cars to toilet cleanser: overhype it and artificially create a demand for it.
In other words, how influential Nirvana may or may not have been is entirely irrelevant to the media. All that matters is how influential and great they can CLAIM Nirvana was.
