I regret to inform you it makes the Waltz nonsense look close to book.
It sticks closer to the book but when it deviates, it really does.
It's odd though because they've obviously read the book, like they actually do Porthos feeling ashamed of his background, which no other adaptation I can think of does, and then ruins it by going off the rails in bizarre ways.
I think they're trying to set up 20 years later with one of the second film spoilers, forgetting that that makes Athos's actions in part 1 make no sense.
