Medicinal cannabis users shouldn't be heading to Australia just yet. It's only just been legalised and only for a small number of conditions - childhood epilepsy that isn't responsive to other medications or surgery, nausea from chemotherapy and nausea in AIDS patients, which wouldn't cover any of the people in the article - and only last week it became possible to buy it from a regular pharmacy rather than going through a specialist program. That said, I think it will become more widespread in the future, especially as growing for medicinal purposes can now be licensed and registered, and quality checks are done on the cannabis just like any other medicine.
