Fic writing, me being silly, the Judge Dredd trailer and the Shakespeare Meme

I promise there will be a more content-heavy post tomorrow.

Once again, I must beg for a beta. It's 1500 words of X-Men: First Class Emma Frost fic with too much Magneto if anyone feels like it.

I'm also having comma issues with the title of another fic. I'm trying to decide whether "My Brother Bill" or "My Brother, Bill" is more correct.

~~~~
The really silly portion of today's post comes from this post on Nerve.com - http://www.nerve.com/entertainment/ranked/the-expendables-ranked-by-lifetime-sexual-magnetism
Which is wrong, damn it. Mostly because there is no planet where Sly Stallone is more attractive than Jason Statham, not even early '80s Nighthawks era Stallone. Also, the top 3 really ought to be Dolph Lundgren, Jet Li and either Bruce Willis or Statham. Actually, I'm okay with any variation of that top 4.
~~~~

I've meant to post about the Dredd trailer for some time.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PifvRiHVSCY

I am torn. On the one hand, it looks like it's going to be your basic action film, which is not what Judge Dredd is. On the other hand, some of the visual effects, especially the bits where you see things from the perspective of the slo-mo users looks so much like the comics and a lot of the scenery and costumes looks just right.

Also, they've got the greatest excuse for slow-motion shots ever :)

Shakespeare Meme - Day #26: Your favorite couple

Beatrice and Benedict, easily.

Because they really do love each other and I don't dislike either of them. The next nearest possibility is Hermia and Lysander.

Meme Frenzy (part 2)

Shakespeare Meme - Day #24: An actor or actress you would love to see in a particular role

The obvious one would be Matt Smith as Hamlet, because he's one of the few actors I can think of that is young enough to be Hamlet, and good enough to portray him. That being said, if he doesn't want to, I'd love to see him as Andrew Augecheek as well.

If Kenneth Branagh (Sir Kenneth Branagh!!! So very happy) ever decides to do The Tempest I and my mother, god willing, will be there in a flash, hang the cost.

Polly Walker as Cleopatra is also on this list.

Meme related - re: the AU meme (http://redfiona99.livejournal.com/778797.html) I'm trying to come up with a female version of 'hasn't got the cojones'. I've toyed with the obvious 'hasn't got the ovaries', but I'm not sure it works. I know "hasn't got the balls" comes from the habit of various cultures (I know the Roman definitely) for men to hold their genitals when swearing oaths etc, and I'm not sure there is a direct equivalent for easy grabbing, unless we're going for ODB style 'bam'-ing.

Mostly Links

Mostly because Question Time last night brought home the fact that most politicians are neither trained orators nor particularly good at rhetoric. David Aaronovitch, ye though I have undoubtedly mis-spelt his name, on the other hand ... Although Tim Farron did a really good job of selling the most recent budget, a far better job of it than the Chancellor ever did.

That being said I am annoyed at the number of people in Britain involved in political and judicial life who seem to think it's okay to send Abu Quatada (a bad, bad man, I know) to Jordan because they've got a promise that *his* trial won't use evidence gained by torture. How about, you know, we don't treat with countries that use torture, or does that only apply when they're torturing people we like.

I'm similarly miffed by the lack of government response re: the Bahrain Grand Prix. I seem to recall reading that the French government actually banned the French F1 teams from competing at the South African Grand Prix back in the apartheid era. Could we not do that again? (And no, there's no hope of convincing Bernie, and Bernie will fine the teams if they don't turn up without good reason.)

Anyway, on to the links -

With a grateful nod to [livejournal.com profile] nwhyte who posted a link to a defendant's own blog, which then provided a link to the British and Irish Legal Information Institute's link to the judges summation of a recent libel trial where two of the defendants were Amazon and Richard Dawkins (and his foundation) - http://www.bailii.org/ew/cases/EWHC/QB/2012/B3.html

Now judge's judgements, summations and what-have-you are normally worth reading, because it's good way of learning about law in a country where precedence has a strong weight, and it also clarifies a lot of legal issues. It's also useful when the judgement is being spoken of, because this is being spoken of as a victory for the forces of reason, when mostly the judge's summation seems to be, 'yeah, he was rude, but that's not actionable'.

~~~~
The BBC posted an interesting link about Norway's legal system - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-17740229
Which it is talking about because of the Brevik trial. About which the BBC posted another interesting article here - 'Singled out' Breivik survivor tells of trial necessity - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-17750133
~~~~

On a less serious front, in the football news, this makes me glad - Turkey's Emre banned for insulting Zokora - http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/17784555

While I have nothing against Fenerbahce or Turkey, that the Turkish FA are willing to ban players ought to be a signal to UEFA that it really needs to get it's own house in order, and I'm talking about the fact that Arsene Wenger got twice the fine for complaining about the ref than Porto did for it's fans shouting some vile things at Mario Balotelli and the rest of Man. City's black players.

So during the Featherstone vs Castleford Challenge Cup match, Rangi Chase accidentally broke Tangi Roopati's jaw. He, understandably, is very apologetic (it's one of those odd situations where I actually believe that the player throwing the punch didn't mean to break the other man's jaw). The problem lies in the UK's bloody-minded visa system which says that Roopati can only earn money from rugby-related activities, which means he's basically paid to play. If he can't play, he can't get paid. This is a problem when you've got a 12 week injury lay-off. So Featherstone Rovers are organising a fund to help out, which I'm very tempted to contribute to - http://www.featherstonerovers.net/article.php?id=7944

But then again, that's the thing about rugby league, it is very much a community sport, like when Bradford had to get out their begging caps for money, I know Saints fans who chipped in (admittedly because you can't get the joy of beating them if they don't exist), and the Widnes chairman gave them £10,000.

~~~~
I do love that Fergie doesn't like it when his players dive - http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/17770220 Or rather, I suspect, he wishes that they'd keep it for the big matches so people don't get suspicious.
Krimis, TV, Films and Adverts, oh my
Just wondering whether nitrous oxide (or whichever NO-variant it is) has suddenly become a party drug in the US, because after many years of hearing it's name in the past tense for that usage, suddenly three krimis in a row have had it as the drug of occasion (Miami, SVU and then New York).
NCIS is back in my good books because the wildly right wing military krimi is the one that pointed out how wrong it is was that it's so much easier to get a warrant to raid a mosque than it is for any other religious building.
~~~~

The uptick in US drama has had a good effect on UK drama, and even better, they've realised that British TV doesn't have the money to outslick US TV so they're going back to the kitchen sink. Score one for realistic drama. It's even more fun when it's the fantasy dramas that are doing kitchen sink (a la 'The Fades').

~~~~
I know it doesn't need saying, but Danny Houston (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0404111/) can act. Just seen 'The Proposition' (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0421238/) and yes, well, it plays exactly how you'd imagine an Aussie based Western written by Nick Cave would run.
Enjoyed is the wrong word, but it's good.
I particularly like the new Guardian one, even if I'm not sure what I'm supposed to be getting from it.
One of the Aldi ones is class too - http://aldi.co.uk/uk/html/service/23225.htm although they're all quite fun (http://aldi.co.uk/uk/html/service/7232.htm), I particularly recommend the tea one.
(no subject)
Just remembered another thing I wanted to say in my last post. Seriously funny moment I caught on Graham Norton on Friday night. So the guests are Gerard Depardieu, Damien Lewis and Olly Murs, and Depardieu was, I think, advertising his new cook book. So they were talking about diets, and Depardieu was basically pooh-poohing the whole idea, and Olly Murs started telling this story about how the paparazzi had snapped a photo of him in his swimming trunks and he had a beer belly. Not liking how he looked, he went on a low carb diet. So Murs is detailing what he eats for breakfast, lunch and dinner, with Depardieu giving a constant refrain of 'sad, so terribly sad'. I think I love him.
Thomas Castaignede was on the rugby today. Oh Thomas, how they could have done with you. I'm sorry but he remains the first rugby union player who isn't Jonah Lomu who I ever even liked, and damn could he ever play.
I can't help but feel that no matter how crackpot Lievremont was, he could still get his team to beat England.
Shakespeare Meme - Day 4 - Favourite Heroine
The reason I couldn't say Ganymede for the hero one was because I'm using Rosalind for this. I love her, rather a lot. It's that she has such get up and go. Things at court get beyond endurance and then she gets banished, she got up and went. Her best friend decides to go with her, fine, they'll come up with a cover story.
(Um, I've only just realised that in the version of this I know best Helen Mirren was Rosalind, certain things, they may be explained.)
Of Murder Mysteries and Memes
First of all Poirot:Hallow'een Party (spoilers inside) )
Good job on all fronts.
Thorne:Sleepyhead was less well done. I managed to catch the end through use of the V+ box.
Part of the problem is that they totally got Thorne wrong. Not totally wrong, but the feel of him was off. In the books he's well aware he's mildly ridculous, and several other characters point that out to him too. (Spoiler) they also changed )
They kept Alison, who is the most wonderful character in the book, and the one I was most scared of them changing, but they turn the interesting, spikey, short-cropped grey-haired Anne Coburn into someone far more traditionally comforting (and cast long, blonde-haired Natascha McElhone). None of that should be taken as a diss on the actress, who played the now somewhat under-written part as well as it could be.
They also changed the plot. Now I grant the book's plot made sense only in the book but it made sense, and was part of the whole thing that our lead character and his hunches are not always right and the great male hero complex is not a good thing, and the tv show lost all that.
However, I shall be the first to admit that I was watching this for Aiden Gillen. I was intrigued when he was cast, especially since the Radio Times made such a thing of him being in it so I watched the first episode and all he got to do was be background pathologist guy/best friend/mildly suspicious.
I did wonder why he'd taken the part, and then I remembered that this is a man who was in a WWE film, he has no sense or shame.
Then I saw the 3rd part (mostly squeaking about Aiden Gillen below) )
So yes, I'll be watching more of it, but still for the wrong reasons.
Having seen how long this entry has gotten, meme later.
Aiden Gillen, you've done it again
Okay, so for the first time in years I'm actually watching an ITV show on first run through thanks to the man and it's actually quite good.
I mean, Aiden Gillen is doing that manic slow burn he does so very well. The rest of the police squad are 2 women (one of whom is the commanding officer), an Asian policeman and Shaun Parkes (who you'll know from either Casanova or Doctor Who) playing a Frank Pembleton rip-off.
Some of the dialogue is crazy bad though, and, as I said, the Pembleton rip-off is somewhat blatent. The acting is definitely good, with the exception of the most recent victim. Admittedly, I have my suspicions as to what's going on, but yeah, good so far.
There will be a narrative verdict
I went to see Sherlock Holmes on Wednesday. My response was wheee! With some reservations, but mostly wheeee! )
All that being said, two other, non-spoilery bits of great amusement.
I spent the film wondering why I recognised P.C. Clark. It turns out it's William Houston who played Coriolanus when I saw it.
I also spent large chunks of the film swearing blind that it was the Dubliners doing the Rocky Road to Dublin on the soundtrack. I made my poor and unfortunate friends wait until the end of the credits to check, and of course it wasn't on there. I imdbed it later and sure enough it was (it's John Sheahan's fiddling), but really, I don't deserve my friends's patience.
I also don't deserve their generosity, because Naomi and Dr. Stu have bought me the 2000AD Big Finish audios for my birthday.
Caribbean Carnival
Leicester is awesome.
Today is carnival day in Leicester, because, as well as having the biggest Divali celebration in the country, we have the second biggest Caribbean carnival in the country, after the Notting Hill one. Much fun was had by all, people were laughing, dancing, and it was totally inclusive, Chinese grannies dancing next to 5 year old boys, and girls of every size and shape jigging like crazy.
Loved up-edness may also be due having a massage, I feel like liquid gold.
I have found out why I recognised Alice Carter from Children of Earth, she was in a Wycliffe. This is why we should support dramas rather than reality tv shows. It means young actors get exposure.
Tour Spam (and West End Musicals)
Apparently I underestimated the ASO's sneakiness. The Bastille day stage is one of the two where team radio is forbidden. This is a great idea, so great that even the ASO and UCI agree on the topic.
Bit of Cancellara squeaking - "Cancellara Gives Arvesen A Feed...
Arvesen didn’t take a feedbag in Glenic but now his colleague Fabian Cancellara is emptying the contents of his ’musette’ and handing it to Arvesen."
(Arvesen fell off, he's called for the race doctor, things are not looking good.)
Racing update - Of the 4 leaders, 3 of them are French, and the lone Russian, knowing exactly what they're up to is racing v. cleverly.
~~~~

Musicals

Apparently the unstoppable Barrowman is playing Albin in the musical version of La Cage Aux Folles (picture here - http://bluerosefairy.livejournal.com/145625.html). It pleases me that his Albin makes a slightly worse woman than me, even if she's slightly too trashy for Zaza, but dude, he could knock that one right out of the park because if ever a role played to his strengths ...

I still love the film far too much to want to see the musical though. (By the by, the Birdcage is a terrible remake.)

Other than that, I was reading the Times yesterday and the new Fagin for the West End Oliver is Omid Djalli, which could be awesome. Any way, read the rest of the advert, and Burn Gorman is playing Bill Sykes, which, while he might be short, he should get away with, because I'm reasonably sure he can be malign enough.

I like Oliver, Mum can't stand it, mostly because 1) I know the words to most of the songs, and 2) it's one of the few musicals where most of the songs are in ranges I can actually sing in.

Robin Hood

So Robin Hood. I watched 3 more episodes, Saturday just gone, and I do believe it's getting worse.

The first one was "Let the Games Begin", which featured the return of Guy of Guisburne. I have to assume that Richard Armitage has given up all hope of escape, given the ludicrous levels of evil leering he did in it. But having Guy about the place tends to spice things up. There was also stuff for Little John to do (which is good) as him, we like. Oh, yeah, if the fabulous Stu reads this, I recognised Bertha from Queer as Folk.

Of course, this was only setting up for the introduction of the big bad in "Do You Love Me", Prince John has arrived, and he's played by Toby Stephens - Photobucket

Yeah. I'll get round to hating him once my body has finished being in a full-body toe curl. I have no explanation for it but Toby Stephens has, for as long as I can remember, induced a state of deep seated umf (to steal Wyndi's phrase).

So yeah, you get Guy (who looks like this Photobucket) [Further photos behind this cut )

on his knees in front of Prince John, who is demanding to be told that Guy loves him.

Despite the fanservice (and really, Guy is the go-to guy for fanservice in this show) it still terrible. Although, the number of women who have suddenly revealed a thing for leather when it's on Guy borders on the disturbing.

So yes this continues on to the actual plot of both 'Do You Love Me' and the episode that follows it 'Too Hot to Handle' )

Now my complaints (anachronisms caught = 3, 1) Kate is carrying a katana or something of a similar design, 2) Tuck's blow dart and 3) Alan joking about 'a slice and ice'.) will centre on the writing, and it's complete lack of cohesion.

Now, I'm used to them ignoring what has gone before, but normally they keep the characters the same, and by the end of the last series, they'd at least achieved a cohesive tone.

So far this season, they've straightened out Much so he isn't continually fussing over Robin, which is really odd, and they seem to have totally forgotten Marian. Not that she existed, but how she made Guy and Robin. I mean, at the end of the last series, it's was an even money bet as to whether Guy was going to show his true 'evil' colours, or whether he was going to go off the deep end. Neither happened. Robin hasn't gone on the epic revenge that he promised either, and about the only thing that Marian is used for is as something they can insult each other with. There's very little organic growth to the random call backs to Marian either, especially in comparison to the times when they have shown it (i.e. Little John at the end of last season, he'd not mentioned his family, but when he did speak of them it was entirely fitting, and he got a couple of scenes like that this year too.)

It's really strange, and I don't know how much of this is to do with them killing Marian off at the end of the last series, it seems to have unbalanced everything. Especially the female characters, I mean, Marian and Djaq at least had their own characters, and while Isabella does, Kate really doesn't (mooning around over Robin and being the 'girl power' girl don't count as character). I do wonder how much notice Lucy Griffiths gave of her intention to leave, because large chunks of Kate's character could have been written with her in mind and the whole thing smacks of hasty re-write, especially as it's not like they've got new writers (I looked it up), and I refuse to believe they lost what little talent they had overnight.

And because of having three new characters to write in, the old regulars have had very little to do. I mean, Tuck has Djaq's misc. alchemy/medical/general chem knowledge, and Kate has taken up Marian's 'girl in peril' position. (There's been no one to replace Will, but they've upgraded Much and Allan's fighting abilities instead). Tuck's been getting a lot of Little John's 'this is a bad idea' lines, and I'm not sure Allan has had anything to do except mock Much.

Isabella seems to be very much a dark! Marian, whose forced/arranged marriage actually took place, and she has character, mostly an inverse of her brother's but ... well, with this, I'll take what I can get, and if Marian had stayed, I think her character would still have worked.

It'll be interesting to see how it develops.

Film stuff

1) Housemates are cinema snobs. Not film snobs but cinema snobs. A new cinema has just opened in the centre of town, and it apparently has comfier chairs (they're definitely better set out than in most cinemas). Very few people go, and I find it a little lacking in atmosphere, compared to the grubby but very lively Odeon we also have (which is also nearer, although slightly more expensive). The Showcase in town does have the advantage of being a Showcase and I do most definitely prefer it to the Odeon, but if I'm bothering to go watch something at the cinema I like having an audience. There's a reason why all my favourite 'going to the cinema' stories feature the audience.

2) Watched Transporter 3 two days ago, and there's plenty of shirtless Statham action. And less unclothed girl action, leading to housemately complaint that girls were getting more out of this film that guys (as though that's a terrible crime). I pointed out that there's still cars and explosions and fight scenes for the menfolk. Counter-complaint was that I liked those things too. Counter-riposte - I know, it's a fun film for me.

3) How would one explain the appeal of Paul Bettany to ones straight, male housemates? I got as far as charming, witty and intelligent, and hot, but they pointed out that that is not really the best explanation.

4) I've seen the new Holmes trailer (RDJ version of Holmes). Well, I'll probably still go and watch it, but mostly because Mark Strong is playing the bad guy. I'm still trying to figure out what accent RDJ was failing miserably at. I couldn't quite place why it didn't work for me, until Luke called up last night, moaning about something else, and then said it was vulgar. Which I don't think is quite right either, but it comes close to why I didn't like it. Also, dear film-makers, if you give me a few minutes I'll find the quote where Holmes abjures all female company because they have icky girly cooties (and no, it's not any less childish than that).

Patrick McGoohan

Sad to hear about his death, because I enjoyed a lot of his work and he features, if somewhat indirectly, in a family legend.

I like the Prisoner and my Uncle claims it as part of our fellowship, because he loves it too. He didn't get to see it on it's first run, but it was being re-shown when he was working in the same factory as my Nan. The final episode gets moved for football. It gets moved on to a day that he's supposed to be working nights (it's on at some dead of night time slot), so he pulls a sickie so he can be at home to watch it. To this day, my Nan still thinks it was a deeply silly thing to do, and my Uncle still hasn't the foggiest what the last episode was about.

Might as well use this as an excuse to post my feelings about 11 as will be.

I already have my ideal Doctor and his name is 3. ;)

More seriously, while I may have wanted someone not skinny and young and generally hoped for a ancient, old-school type Doctor, I think I can live with this chap. Mostly after [livejournal.com profile] andrastewhite commented that he's a manic hand flapper. I'm a fellow sufferer, and therefore find this an endearing trait.

I also live in hope that the screaming teenage fangirls might be put off and there might be less romance. This is not to suggest he is in anyway ugly, but he has a fine chin and a proud expanse of forehead.

I can also say that, quite thankfully, the new Doctor will still be older than me. Now, as I said, I'd prefer an older actor, mostly because I think they're better because they've seen more and a lot of acting comes from seeing how people react to things.

While he's an unknown, that's as it should be, to my mind anyway. And everyone who watched Ruby in the Smoke either thought he was good or can't remember him, so he can't be terrible, can he?

More to the point [livejournal.com profile] selenak asked who you've have as Who, out of dead actors, and I was deeply intrigued by the idea of a David Niven Dr. Who. Out of alive actors, I'd love to have seen someone like Ramon Tikaram in the role. Because he can do clever, and that's one of the most important things, the actor, or actress, needs to be able to do clever.
