Fic Recs

Crossover:

Doctor Who and Star Trek:

The Tea Party at the End of the World by Medie, with a great sense of Guinan having known the Doctor for *far* too long.

Labyrinth:

Trial and Error by amelia_petkova - a fun fic where the magical world and it's not-common-sense running smack bang into reality in all it's ridiculous glory. It's a hard world out there for a Goblin King.

Marvelverse:

Still Standing by Zinnith - as several of you know, I am a bit !!!! about Hawkeye and Nat. And this is perfect, post-first Avengers film them, slightly het, with excellent characterisation.

RDJ Sherlock Holmes:

Damnation by Indiana_J - another fun fic, where a criminal is going to regret going up against Mary.

Stargate:

Archaeology by Penknife - this is a really interesting look at Earth from an alien's point of view, and Teal'c trying to settle in. I particularly love the description about the difference between archaeology and history but that might be because I've had archaeologists drunkenly try to explain it to me.

To make up for less than cheerful previous post - fic recs :)

Galaxy Quest:

Episode Thirty-Three:The Dark Reflection by Lizardbeth - pitch perfect Gwen DeMarco fic set during the filming of the original series.

Homicide: Life on the Streets/Law and Order: SVU crossover:

An Act of Retreat by TrivialPursuit - perfect Munch fic. Angry and bitter and cynical and hopelessly himself the way he is. Also, a pretty killer last two lines.

Star Trek:

Veritas by Penknife - very believable Garak fic

Fic Recs

Batman/Homicide: Life on the Streets

Up And Away by Likeadeuce In which John Munch moves to Gotham.

This works. This works so well, because this *is* how Munch would respond to moving to Gotham.

Merlin/Pirates of the Caribbean

To Say Nothing of the Goat by Penknife.

Several pairings are hinted at, in a way that is very Jack Sparrow. Things may have happened, possibly. It's just so gloriously plausibly voiced despite the unusual crossover, and there's just so many glorious possibilities. Such fun!

Phantom of the Opera:

Enfants de l'Orage by Sandrine Shaw

Set shortly after the musical finishes. Author's summary: Wounded and on the run, Erik turns to the only refuge he knows.

I like the possibility of this. It's all so plausible, this could have happened when the audience turns away. Also, that faint hint of possible future Mme. Giry/Erik is totally my bag.

Suicide Squad

Smoke and Mirrors by Nickidemus Enchantress/June Moone.

Yes, exactly what that pairing implies. And it takes their dual nature to it's logical extreme, and the one way June might be able to hold Enchantress off.

Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle

The Missing Worlds by Mikkeneko.

The whole thing is so good. It reads like it could be missing volumes of the story. All the characters are so well drawn, whether they're our usual heroes or the people they meet (or the people they aren't quite), and the settings are so well described that I can see them in my mind's eye, drawn CLAMP style. This is excellent.

Fic Recs

I thought I might as well use my suddenly expanded free time for something useful, like catching up on recs. And yes, I am aware some of these date back to 2009, I have lots of catching up to do.

Due South:

Anticipation by arrow. Perfect Diefenbaker fic. I love his food-centric view of the world and slight houndly sneakiness and the way he conceptualises human things.

Celebration by blissfire. Which reads like one of the wackier episodes with bonus Ray(K)/Frasier. And Turnbull at his most Turnbulliest.

Harry Potter:

25 Stories Penknife Never Wrote About The Marauders by Penknife. 25 un-fics which capture the characters really well, 22 and 23 are particularly heartbreaking.

The Perfect Match by lady_mahadevi. Wonderful idiot quidditch-boys-in-love fic! I love this so much. It sounds so much like boys talking about football in our world and yes!

I Dream of Genie:

My Master's Secret Mission by hradzka. Speaking of something that reads like a missing episode. Everyone is perfectly in character from Jeannie on down. Also marvellous.

Sort of extended notes about Bitter Knowledge

Bitter Knowledge is an odd fic. I mean, it's very much a "me" fic, wrestling gen that sticks very much to kayfabe, but at the same time, it's one of the most snarky, kayfabe-breaking fics. For instance, the bit about Kash's rant is from one of the many internet rumour boards.

On the other hand, the angle itself also had that weird mix of not being quite one thing or the other. Or rather, it was a complete lie, pretending to be the truth, which later turned out to be a lie, which had several sub-lies going on underneath.

I still say the Clare Lynch angle could have worked if they'd either gone with

1) AJ has lied to us all. They'd actually have had to have AJ mis-using his mysterious pull with Dixie (either she's a deeply gone for him and he's pulling the wool over dear, desperate Dixie's eyes, or she's just as wicked as he is), and the Frankie Kazarian could be the guy who wanted to keep AJ's secrets, found out what it was, didn't want to believe it, but when he saw Daniels's evidence he had to stand up for what was right, good and true (and TNA).

or

2) AJ has been desperately trying to help Clare Lynch and has enlisted Dixie's aid (because she is right, good, true and TNA), and Daniels is just using this opportunity to stir it, because he is Daniels.

If you played it either of those two ways, someone comes up looking a million dollars.

In the actual storyline, no-one came out of it looking more than $20.45, even if it did eventually get us Bad Influence (the world tag team champions of the world) and the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.

The Clare Lynch angle really was as bad as you've heard.

The other weird part for me is that trying to write it in something that resembled Kazarian's voice. Because however florid Bad Influence Kazarian got, just out of Fortune Kazarian would not have come out with "filled with unseemly glee" to describe Daniels. Even if that was exactly what he looked like. Because he did.

It was a fun challenge writing for 1) someone who doesn't sound like me and 2) for whom I couldn't use my usual tricks.

(The most excellent fic about the Daniels and AJ Styles's dynamic is Chokehold by Twig, which I recommend as strongly as I possibly can.)

Day 23 - Song you'd have played at your wedding.

I plan on never getting married. I think several of you have had to put up with my rant on how it's an outdated institution that I see no purpose in (not a judgement call on you if you have chosen to get married or are getting married, I am cool with other people getting married, it's just not for me).

So yeah, no. And much though I'm tempted to go with either 'Oops I Did It Again' or 'There She Goes Again' for an answer, I shall be temporarily sensible. You see, when my Mum was getting married, she wanted Amazing Grace. And she was promised by the organist that it would be played. The organist was a dirty rotten liar, and instead my Mum got the Wedding March, which she loathes with a powerful fury. Therefore, on behalf of my Mum, I bring you Amazing Grace.

She's getting it for her funeral instead. She is very persistant on the topic ;)

Yeah, I have a whole CD of Chopin cello concertos. They are not a good sign. If you see me reaching for them, it normally means 'leave me alone, am miserable, shall return to functionality in about 3 hours, DO NOT APPROACH!' Thankfully, my family actually respond to this signal.

lgbtfest recommendations

Words To Live By by [livejournal.com profile] nahco3, Iron Man Movieverse, Tony Stark/James "Rhodey" Rhodes - http://nahco3.livejournal.com/101611.html

In which Rhodey is awesome, and copes with Don't Ask, Don't Tell and Tony Stark at the same time. And in which Tony is spot on just the right side of insufferable.

Confessions by [livejournal.com profile] alicamel, Babylon 5, Susan Ivanova/Talia Winters - http://community.livejournal.com/lgbtfest/54311.html

This takes the closetting issue and gives it a whole 'nother spin, because the problem really isn't that they're women - the most awesome thing being that that barely gets a mention - the problem is that Susan isn't a telepath and Talia is. It feels real, and Babylon 5 flavoured.

A Series of Conversations on an Awkward Subject by [livejournal.com profile] lorannah, Temeraire, No pairings, the main character is Emily Roland - http://community.livejournal.com/lgbtfest/55115.html

First, a note, I know nothing of this fandom. But there are dragons. And a not quite British navy of the 1800s, and I'm a total sucker for both. The world is wonderfully sketched and the characters are interesting, and there are awesome dragons (and terrifyingly competent mothers).

And the World Changed Hereafter by [livejournal.com profile] liseuse, Brideshead Revisited, Cordelia - http://community.livejournal.com/lgbtfest/59064.html

It captures Cordelia so well, her kindness, her religiousness and her cheerful nature. And it's all so possible. Possibly the most wonderfully warm fic from this years lot, it's all hope and possibility despite everything.

The Rules by [livejournal.com profile] gileonnen, Discworld Novels, two OCs and a couple of recognisable wizard. http://community.livejournal.com/lgbtfest/59239.html

A very recognisable world too, the writer really catches that rambling, amused, observant thing Terry Pratchett has going, and the wizards are suitably themselves, with all that entails.

Garth Merenghi’s Darkplace: The Gay Issue by [livejournal.com profile] smilesawakeyou, Garth Merenghi’s Darkplace, misc. pairings. http://smilesawakeyou.livejournal.com/143429.htm

Since, as far as I know, the only other person on my f-list who knows of Garth Merenghi’s Darkplace is [livejournal.com profile] opera142, I feel a warning is in order. Unless you have been previously inducted, this may make very little sense. She gets the pompousness of Merenghi and his determined belief that he's writing the best, darkest, most wonderful TV programme ever, while making it clear, that no, it's Darkplace as usual. It's a little gem of a fic.

The L Word by [livejournal.com profile] sophinisba, Harry Potter, Luna (various other characters and also Luna/Padme) http://sophinisba.livejournal.com/221626.html

One of the warnings is for frivolous wordplay, and that's why I'm recommending it. It's 10 connected drabbles all alliterating on a letter, about Luna and how she views her life and love. It's wonderfully well done.

As You Will by [livejournal.com profile] baffledking, Twelfth Night, Cesario (Cesario/Orsino, and Viola/Orsino) http://baffledking.livejournal.com/403986.html?view=1792274

I love the writing in this, and it could quite easily fit into the atmosphere of the end of the play.

Lomendánar (Little Love for the Things of My Love) by [livejournal.com profile] vulgarweed, Lord of the Rings, Ents http://community.livejournal.com/lgbtfest/86034.html?view=1445906

Yes, it's Ents in love. And it's so perfectly Entish. I want to hug this fic and never let it go.

(no subject)

Didn't see much of RAW, only about twenty minutes, due to silly girls who'd rather watch Sex and the City. Not that I wasn't tempted for once but even my crush on Mikhael Barishnikov has its limits.

Anyway my main RAW thoughts are:

HBK getting angry at Orton would be believable if the height difference didn't make me giggle. Really, Shawn, if you're that much smaller, looking them in the chest does not make them scared.

Shut up HHH. (and could the muse one do the same.) And that pedigree looked nasty.

I would like to state for the record that I don't care how it happens, it can be the flukiest, screwiest, most whack job way of winning ever, I just want Benoit to win at WM. Someone in the writing/booking/ideas department is doing something right if I'm feeling this hyper about it already. Plus Benoit being fantastic helps too.

In a similar vein, Eddie winning would be cool too. It's not going to happen, but it would be cool.

From flashback - Bad Kane, bad. No breaking of the Trish. But yay for Jericho.

And that was all I saw.

However, due to Sex and the City foolishness (or stupidly shutting at 11.30 foolishness) I'll probably miss Benoit v Flair next week. So not fair. Edit: I'll also probably miss the Ric/Randy love in. Bah!

Other than that I saw the first about 30-40 minutes of Chicago and want to know what the fuss is about. Yes, it's good, but it's not Best Picture material. No goosebumps have been brought about.

That's probably because of the complete lack of sympathetic characters other than Amos Hart and the Russian woman (who by the way I'm presuming is doomed) Okay, so fine, they're murderers and other riff raff so they shouldn't be sympathetic but it did lead me to just wanting Roxy dead. Because she was so wishy-washy. Velma at least had spirit.

The best character so far has to be the detective. Much hearting of the detective.

However some questions were left

1) Why is Richard Gere singing with an English accent?
2) Why does the director insist on shooting his female cast in the least flattering light possible? Or at least their legs. And crotches. Sam, very male, very fond of the female form Sam, was complaining.

3) Why did what's his face that Roxie shot put his underwear back on to go the toilet? I'm presuming it was because of a male nudity problem but surely there had to be some other way around it.

Catherine Zeta Jones and Queen Latifah own me, but you knew that already. Most of the women in the Cell Block Tango also own me, particularly Squish, the one whose husband ran on to her knife ten times.

And on that note, how much was that scene influenced by Jailhouse Rock. And it was also nice to know what the words were about having spent ages thinking about it watching Bourne and Kraatz's routine to the tune.

(Ice skating note - I haven't seen the Europeans but how the fuck did Joubert win the men's? France produces all these male skaters who do these wonderfully intricate and interesting to watch with tonnes of artistry and one jumping machine, and the jumping machine wins. Any bitterness due to being a fan of the guy in second place has nothing to do with it, because Yagudin beat Plushenko all the time and I'd still admit he was the better skater.)

One thing I did like about the film was the way the musical numbers were played out in Roxie's head.

On an RL note, I'm going to a fencing competition on Sunday. It involves getting up at 6.45. Wish me luck.
~~~~
Fencing - ended up getting up at 6.30 instead. Breakfast was museli bars and water. Museli bars tasted like cardboard but they did grow on me.
Had lots of fun. Won the bronze in the womens event. Admittedly there were only three women but ;) Reeda, the other girl from the club that went, won the silver. We were both totally outclassed by the winner so no complaints. Chris the club captain won the overall competition. So all is whee. Love fencing. My back doesn't but what does my back know.
And I've got a cold now but that was a mixture of the early rising, the lack of food, the stupidly high temperature inside the fencing gear - I'd love to know how James manages in his goalie gear, the cold outside and that there's been something going round anyway.
~~~~

Monday, back aches something chronic. Walking hurts, sitting up straight hurts. Buses are an agony.

Sound on my laptop has completely gone. I do wish it wouldn't do that.

Just read Mynx's Evolution fic. If you haven't already, go read it. It's good. Although it did set me pondering on how you can see a pairing completely differently from the same starting point. But difference is always good otherwise you end up with 515 different variations on Matt and Jeff loved each other very much but this was fucked up because they were brothers and therefore Jeff killed himself. Not that there's anything much wrong with that either.

Read another chapter of FOTR last night. Man is Gandalf ever the exposition dude. But it fits for he is supposed to be wise and knowledgable. I have no problem with someone being exposition if they are naturally a source of information. So far film Gandalf seems to be very like book Gandalf.
Book Frodo is a little different, I'm not entirely sure how but in someway he gives off a different vibe. As does Book Sam. So far he's burst into tears twice. Save me from over-emotional hobbits.
And Aragorn got a mention.

Then there's all these bits of dialogue that happen in the film. That's one of the good things about the way it was adapted, PJ didn't stick directly to it but when something was good he used it somewhere were it would fit. Like the speech about Bilbo's pity. It wouldn't have fit in at the beginning of the film where it is in the books (and where it works very well) but it did fit in perfectly in Moria.

There's something so right about the ring downscaling its evil to suit the bearer. And of Gollum becoming a sneak when he first found it. There something very unsettling about his downfall too, very understandable, Smeagol's story is indeed a very sad one.

Some how I'm thinking none of the Dwarf ringbearers became ringwraiths because you never hear any of the Nazgul complain about not being made for cross country running. And much with the anti-Dwarf elvish propaganda I notice. Bah! Although I do find it interesting that in some way none of the Elvish rings have been tainted, although they could become so if Sauron ever gets the ring back. I wonder how that works. I'm hoping the reason turns up somewhere in the LOTR trilogy.

It also annoys me quite how uppity the Elves are, just sailing off without a care what happens to anyone else. I do like the idea of the Dwarves being a source of information though.
And the description of the evil of Sauron - "He does not need you - he has many more useful servants - but he won't forget you again. Hobbits as miserable slaves would please him more than Hobbits free and happy." It works. Nothing about him being horrific evil or vicious or unspeakable but that horrid air of nastiness that says all those things without needing too.

First mention of hope by Gandalf about Gollum.
And hee, Frodo saying that the Gandalf saying there are other forces than evil at work, and that he and Bilbo were supposed to get the ring, was not an encouraging thought. I have to say I wouldn't find it encouraging either.
