Torchwood

Would someone explain to me why I feel so defensive about a show that I like. It's not that bad people. (Red is sick of people hating on this little show).

I find it beyond my abilities to feel that those faeries are evil. Not nice particularly, but not evil either.

There really was no option for Captain Jack, except to let her go to them, whatever anyone else says. And I also loved the way they shot the mother's anger and grief. It looked messy and possible. That's what I like about Torchwood, it is messy and grimy and just that little bit more real looking than a lot of other sci-fi. This was also what I liked about Firefly. Give me messy sci-fi or give me death.

So does anyone have any guesses as to whether Jack met Eveline in his original timeline or post-Bad Wolf time-line. Ditto also Lahore. Or to paraphrase Stu - his timeline really is confused.

As for Countrycide, there were things that happened in that that are too horrifying to contemplate, and I don't mean the dead bodies. Which were beautiful pieces of SFX work, fantastic teeth and everything.

I mean the sheer unspeakable wrong that is Owen and Glen, because oh dear, so very wrong (and soooo very right). I thought something bad wrong was about to happen when I realised that Gwen was (I assumed) monologuing with no knickers on. I don't care if, as a friend of mine said, it was predictable, it was still a bit of a shock. Especially since Rhys, breaking the original Mickey mold, is actually nice and decent and nice, and did I mention he is not Owen the slappable.

But 1 major improvement of this version of the 'I'm so lonely' bit is that they're showing and telling now, instead of just telling. Still not brilliant, but they're getting better. Of course you're then thinking about how Gwen was saying she was sleeping with Owen because she can't tell Rhys about what she sees so there's this huge disconnect and then you realise that Captain Jack has no one that can understand exactly what he is.

The whole thing about how he used to be a torturer also interests me, if only because I want to write Captain Jack and the Spanish inquisition.

Back to the actual plot of Countrycide - I did like the police being evil, and them discussing camping before hand and, well pretty much everything before the big action pay off, which appears to have fallen flat because no one on the production team talk to each other (that bit I got from the documentary).

They are slowly getting better.

They get points for not pairing the lead female with the lead male character. I may think it's sick and wrong, but whee for doing something different.

Then I watched the Pirate Planet and, sorry but no matter what I'll always love Old Skool Who more because, I'm sorry, but you can't tell a decent sci-fi story in 45 minutes, and Who works better as a serial.

That this was written by the esteemed Mr. Adams may also have helped.

Thank God, someone else who is willing to admit in public that they actually like the show!!!

I really enjoyed Countrycide, but will write it up next week once my travels are over.

I get some really wierd looks in RL for liking it but my feeling is that it is getting better and it is at least trying. I give points for trying.

Cool, I look forward to reading that.
