Didn't watch any Firefly today but that just means I can talk about Safe because I saw it yesterday.
I loved how there were consequences of them transporting cattle. Mostly cowshit jokes but at least there are consequences. And it lead to a lovely bonding moment between Mal and River, because they both understand the need to be free.
I remember a totally different pacing to this episode when I first saw it. Then again when I first saw it I didn't know what happened which might have something to do with it.
Seeing River dance was a cool scene, not just because Summer Glau can dance but because you got to see River as was, before the Feds got to her, brilliant and slightly odd anyway. And very young River was just the sweetest cutest little bratling. The back home scenes also helped show you exactly how much Simon had given up, because dude, a higher powered doctor is one of those careers your parents approve of. Not that I'm bitter because mine doesn't seem to of lab work.
I realise that my previous ramble about how Book was an Operative can answer the question of why the Alliance treated him but I still want to know for certain.
I like that the hill people weren't entirely wacko until River's powers revealed themselves. You do wonder how they arose though, a second settlement on the planet that didn't survive and now are just making do anyway they can like say the Doones in Lorna Doone.
And the scene at the stake. I mean, I know the obvious parallel here is Laertes at Ophelia's grave, but with the difference that Simon would go through with it. Also, it's still the Crazy Space Incest scene. Because he loves her. Now while I'm totally aware that most of the people I know would happily and without a second thought put themselves in harm's way for their family (be it biological or not) there's also this undercurrent that doesn't go away.
I really think that Simon doesn't get Mal at all. I think that's partly being told that all the people out on the Rim are dangerous ruffians, partly the getting hit, and partly that most of the people out on the Rim really are dangerous, backstabbing swine, so he doesn't trust Mal, who always claims he's dangerous (which he is, but in a different way). Which makes some kind of sense, except you'd think that he might have picked up by now that Mal would never leave anyone behind. For a very intelligent person, Simon can be awfully stupid.
